<<-- are there many of you outthere whose babies have had speech delays? Did they finally resolvethemselves? What does a speech evaluation entail? Can they actually tellyou anything? What is an Early Intervention Program? >>

Hi a,

My son is two and a graduate of the helmet therapy. He also has some speech delay. He see's a developmental specialist once a week. She works with a picture board with him and sign language. They also play games to help him learn language skills. His visits are paid for through state funding. It is an early intervention service. Every state has an early intervention program for children birth to age three.

If you ask your pediatrician they should have the no# of your state's i.e. services. All you would have to do is call the ie people. They will set an appt for an

assessment of your child. three women came to our house for the assessment.THey played games with our son and just watched how he did things to determine his level of development(in different area's).THey can tell by the different sounds that a child can make if they are were they should be (as far as speech goes). Then the case worker and you will decide what kind of therapy your child would best benefit from.

Hope this helps ! :o)

Jill, what should a parent look for in terms of signs of speech delay?

My son is 8 months old and I'm not sure what he should be doing. He also

is learning two languages sothis also can cause a delay. He babbles some

and yells like to hear his own voice. Any thoughts? Ann

Hi Jill,

Where is your son with regard to speech -- what can he do? Is he

progressing with the therapy? How do his cognitive abilities seem?

At what age did you realize he had a problem, and at what age did you have

an evaluation done?

Hmm, my pediatrician was talking about getting my son a PIE evaluation when

he turns one -- is this the same thing, by any chance?

It seems to me that this thing was something that wasn't free, as my

pediatrician was saying he wasn't sure if our insurance would pay for it.

a,

Hi .our son HAS progressed since therapy. HE just started wearing

glasses for a crossed eye. Now he focuses much better on lips when people

speak. HE also has learned some speeech skills such as taking turns and

TRYING to echo. He does make MUCH more atttempts than he used to at speech.

He has about 6 words tht he trys VERY hard to say....

He says nie nie for night night,

...baww for ball

...why why for ry ry (hi brother )

...and a few others.

I USED to worry about him mentally. Not anymore. He shows that he has

complete understanding of everything that we say to him.He also has

tremendous empathy.

I can't remember when we began to worry about his speech, just that it

was about the age of 6 months. Our pediatrician finally agreed to refer us

to the Alliance for infants(thats our states ie program) at his 9 month baby

well.

I'm not sure if what your physician was referring to was the same

program as what my son is in. EVERY state is supposed to have a FREE birth

to age three program though. The program is free because it is state funded.

Your pediatrician should have information on the program.

Hope I've helped ! :o)

Hmm, no I haven't checked for food allergies. But it seems like it just has

to do with lumpiness of food -- for example, he is fine with bananas in baby

food jars, but if I mush up bananas myself and leave it just the tiniest bit

lumpy, he gags and it comes back up. Same for carrots. And sometimes he's

find with Cheerios, but sometimes they make him gag.
