Guest guest
Our center is really relaxed on these as we're in a completely separate facility 5 miles from the police department... Dress code for dipatchers is non-existent (3rd shifters have come in in pajamas and slippers) Dayhsifters often where simple sweatsuits or sweat pants and tshirts. Supers I think are expected to dress a little better but there is no SOP on this (I'm one, and none of us do). We can (and do) do anything at our consoles as long as it doesn't distract us from our job. Many of the women cross-stitch or whatever, some of us read alot, we play solitaire and freecell on the PC, we have puzzles and games on a shelf, 3rd shift watches movies sometimes. 3rd shift will bring in nerf balls (or whatever those torpedo-lookin things are) and spend the shift throwing them back and forth across the room. Again, no SOP's on these things (yet). ============================================= kevbayer911@... Guest guest
Dress code: ....shall be neat and well groomed, uniform in good order Dispatchers are allowed to participate in " casual Friday " , were no uniform is necessary. If my old memory serves me correct, the original memo address prohibited types of clothing as tube tops, muscle shirts, short-shorts/skirts, old jeans.... thnks like that . Most of us will wear jeans , sweat shirts, things like that. Our big department manual still has listed, under prohibitied activiy " reading and watching television " altho the department has purchased many televisions and no one complains about reading.... I think that is more for the officers, so anyone caught goofing off during their can receive proper adjustment! A suggestion I have is not so much what you can do while on duty, but who can do it. It drives me crazy, a brand new employee, fresh out of training, that comes to work, plops their feet up on the console and reads a novel, or brings in video tapes when they should still be reviewing all the volumes of manuals we are required to know the contents of. (Not memorize, but know them well enough that when a question is asked, they know which book to look up an answer, or know the appropriate department/person to direct the question to). I believe my supervisor is in the process of prepairing an SOP addressing this issue. And as for your comment about 'trade magazines' (whatever that means) -- I would imagine this would be any of the many that are out there dealing with police procedures. There's a few about the fire service, and even fewer about ems and of course 3 that I know about that deal with dispatchers. Kathy
Guest guest
Dress Code- Standard sheriff's dept. uniform with badge and nameplate, minus gunbelt. Plans are to go to a " casual " uniform (golf shirt and dress pants when our 9-1-1 center goes online, sometime in the future. Activities at work- We don't have a policy except the dispatch center needs to be manned. We have TV & VCR, we can play games on in-house computer, read anything. On a long cold 11-7 shift I will break out my fly tieing kit and tie one or two. As a side note- I have recently changed internet providers and gone with AOL... wish I had done it sooner ( old email rbates@.... Take care and keep 'em safe. Guest guest
Crissy, Our uniform is Police Style with patches and badges, The uniform must be worn from 0600 to 0001. From 0001 to 0600 anything goes, but no hats, shorts, or offensive shirts. The uniform policy gets relaxed on certain holidays (new years, thanksgiving, and christmas). As far as activities : TV, reading, any magazines, cards. Personal calls (on hard phones) are limited to 5 calls, at a maximum of 5 minutes in length each. Cell calls are not regulated yet, but as the abuse (annoyance) mounts, I am sure they will come up with a policy soon. We do not have access to the internet yet, I have been arguing for it for quite some time now, and maybe in the near future we will have it, but so far, No. We are trying to get our uniform changed to something more casual, but it's been a battle so far. We are not in the public eye except when we respond the Field Comm unit, so I see no need for such a rigid uniform. I do not have a problem with a uniform, but not the style we have. wrote: > Hello all...I am looking for assistance in revising our Dress Code Policy, as well as what our " activities at work " can be. Guest guest
We wear uniforms all day, every day. Patches, name tag, badge, the whole shebang. As far as what we are allowed to do at the console, there aren't very many no-no's. We read, watch t.v., crochet, pay bills, search the internet, etc. The only real restriction is that the t.v. be off during " business hours. " We used to be able to play internet games (yahoo spades, backgammon, etc) until certain people abused the privelege. Now we're not allowed to play those games. They really helped to pass the time on midnights. The only games we have now are the ones that come standard on every PC (solitaire, free cell, etc). The only other restriction for the internet is to be cautious of what sites you are visiting, obviously. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Our center is a separate building between the Police and Fire buildings, we have no public contact so the uniform is whatever you have on your back at the time. Cell phones are permitted although one of our people, insists on having the cellphone on one ear and the hard line on the other, will soon cause that to become regulated. We have TV, VCR (as long as volume is reasonable and they can't be heard over the radio),books and mags. There were puzzles but as our Police Chief is named the puzzles on the wall caused us to be called " Mr. 's Neighborhood " so the puzzles are gone. Our only other diversion is intramural paper wad throwing. <snicker> Other than that we are reasonably quiet and professional.
Guest guest
Used to wear a uniform. Talked the Director into plain clothes last year (cheaper). No written policy on this, although I have asked. During regular work days on day shift - office attire (slacks, skirts, button-collared shirts, colored jeans) On Fridays we have university wide " casual days " so we can wear blue jeans during the day. Evenings/Nights and weekend/holidays. Jeans and tshirts are okay. No shorts or ratty/distasteful clothes. We are really comfortable now. We don't see the public unless we want to. I've taken to wearing clean hiking boots during the day (our heater is broken. The space heater just doesn't work as well.) We have department email, games and internet access. Musn't interfere with work. Trainees are not allowed to play games or recreation surf. (They need to be reviewing manuals/materials if they aren't actively training) Other activities such as reading/crochet/sewing/crafts are allowed as long as it doesn't interfere AND you clean up after yourself. One of our dispatchers is getting married this weekend. She brought up her invitations/thank you cards and other bridal stuff to work on during her shift when it was slow. TV is allowed after hours. Just mute or turn down during phone calls or lengthy radio traffic. Personal cells are okay as long as they don't interfere. (get the idea....) I don't see any difference between talking on a cell phone and talking on a land line if it is a personal call. Although, if all your lines are taped, talking on your personnel cell allows you to have " private " conversations..... Patrol doesn't mind. In fact, they were like.....why don't you wear regular clothes, watch TV, etc. As long as we get our work done, they don't mind what we do during the down time. They often come in there and watch with us. annette hallmark tamu pd
Guest guest
<<our heater is broken. The space heater just doesn't work as well.) >> Try a " Vornado " heater. My pod partner brought one in the other day and it heats a moderately large area quickly and almost noiselessly. I personally prefer about 65 degrees for a room, but the camels that have wandered in to sit by her seem to enjoy it. Bob in Tacoma

Weekend for Morning watch is Fri/Sat since when we come in on Suday, that shift ends Monday morning when everyone is coming to work. As far as activities, of course during day watch none. Evening and Morning watch just has limited its activities.....First cause its so busy and people shouldnt really have time, but mostly because it seems that there are some folks who get so absorbed in what they are doing (reading, needlepoint, etc) that they seem to forget they are at work and there are phones to be answered! Morning watch is attempting to get permission to resume them. We can read for right now, but they dont want the whole shift to be punished because of just a few. Guest guest
At Sedgwick County we have had to wear unifrorms for the past several years, This year we changed from a uniform shirt to a polo shirt with docker pants. Which everyone likes a lot better than the uniform. Several different colors of shirts and several different color of pants. On weekends it is blue jeans. We do get $200.00 per year for a clothing allowence
Guest guest
I have a dress code. I wear sweat pants in the winter and shorts in the summer. If it gets warm in the winter, I change into my shorts. If it gets cold in the summer, I put on my sweats. Used to get $500 a year uniform allowance, but then someone figured out that I still wore my shorts anyway, so they took the money away. Damn. Oh well, wearing what u want is worth $500. There is no shift differential, cause I'm the only dispatcher and I don't work nights, weekends or holidays. Damn, the hard luck is killing me. See Vern there life after retirement.
