Guest guest
> Hi Irma, > I'm one of those who reads all the posts but doesn't write too often. I've been following your story pretty closely & I admire you so much for all the research you have done on D.S. & Autism. Also, I'm very interested in hearing all about the nutritional supplements you have been trying with . It's wonderful to hear all the good news about 's recent improvements in behaviour. How's the toilet training going? Thanks , is still doing good , he has come along way . Amazing how our brains are affected of what we eat . I'm glad the Dietary supplement has worked for him . The Flax Seed Oil with the Olive Leaf Extract is a 3 mos. trial . All this was given by parents that had tried it out with their children (23 & 15yrs.old )with Down Syndrome ,who I keep in touch here in San . I know there is still something missing so once the 3 mos. treatment is done . I would like to try The Anti- Candida Immune System-Boosting Diet which will involve The Autistic Treatment Center . At the local Autism Society Support Group I was given information by a parent who had tried it on his son . A recent research links autism and other neurological illnessess to immunological deficiencies . It makes sense because my doctor had me on a trial too . Had me on Golden Seal to cleanse my immune system . It cut down from getting ill . 's toilet training is still a roller-coaster ride . Better than before , though . I guess this will do . Take Care . Guest guest
Hi Irma, Sorry I haven't been reading my e-mails lately. I have A LOT going on with right now. He's now home for the rest of the summer until school starts in three weeks so I'm trying to get things organized and ready for the long spiral down hill from no school structure. I wish was mentally old enough to let me work with him, but " home " is where you play and watch videos. Today we came home with our first dose of Ritalin. I hope it helps to focus him so he can learn this year. I decided to try it now that he doesn't have school so I can keep an eye on how he reacts. I'm a bit nervous. I don't like to give things that might be long term. That scares me. I am not really a medicine kind of a person myself. It's bad enough that he's on a mild antibiotic all the time, but I won't put up with it for a long period of time. I'm always worried about the build up of things and side effects in the future. At least for now we are only doing this until he is mentally ready to learn and pay attention. My mom did ok. I could tell by Sunday when I called that she was getting a little testy. Even my sister told me that she took off her hands on Sunday because my mom was a wreck. I guess the good thing is that now she has a better understanding of what I live with everyday. The conference it self was ok. I had to get out of the frame of mind that my questions would be answered here. It's informational. The workshops were basic and I guess I wanted a little more info. For example, there was a workshop on SI. I was hoping for examples of if your child is always on the go.. try some of these tactics. It actually was what SI is and what it can do and how it has worked for kids. But once I realized that, it was easier to choose which ones I wanted to attend. I went to Joan's on visual strategies and learned a lot. I have so much running through my head that I want to do, it's all now finding the time to do it. Oh well, Thanks for thinking about me. I've been a little down lately and needed a pick me up. Hope to talk to you again soon. Tollefson : ) > , Hi! > Just wondering how are you & your husband are doing ? Guest guest
, This was one of the reason why you were in my mind . You hang in there . You've mentioned exactly what I went through with staying home , watching videos and play . Remember also , I did not know of the ASD ,12 yrs. I hate to say this , but here is where it starts at home , which I hated and I had to contol my patience . I know now, visual pictures helps here to . I hid 's TV ,VCR and his toys in the garage without him looking. At first I didn't , I would try to work around it . Like turning off the TV because I wanted him at the table ,reading time , activities, bath ,brushing teeth, getting dressed, to go out ,etc.. He would scream , throw fits ,hit, would stay lying down in his bed , and would sometimes cry if he did not want to participate. I was even going to purchase a TV Token , a monitor that you adjust to the TV or VCR as a rewarding system. I was still looking for answers. All this has changed in our lives this year, as is cooperating at home and outings , this had worked for my son . An immediate reward is needed so that your child could understand that you're not being mean and your following through . Its work and patience, but its rewarding after you accomplished what you wanted your child to do . As you set the schedule, you would like for and it may change with your daily routines . Lets say you wanted to sit and participate an activity at home . Make it short and simple . Just getting him to sit and listen is fine , then add on with time . If he does not want to participate , tell him NO TV or play . Believe me he'll come around . If he participates , then ask him which video or toy ? Same for toilet-training and etc., when he wants to watch a video or play , tell him lets work ,eat or potty first then video or play. Just getting him to learn the routine that is good enough to understand and that will cut down on his behavior. If you ever get a chance , purchase the book Steps To Independence , Teaching Everyday Skills to Children with Special Needs by Bruce L. Baker and Alan J. Bightman . There is so much to TRY, to explain . As you teach him these steps then the self-help skills will be a little easier to deal with . As for the medication if it helps , you do what you have to . Drugs can help a child medically to function better. They help transmitter effect and likely increase blood flow to the area of the brain that was not functioning properly before . Good timing to monitor him while he is at home . Did you choose this or the doctor suggested it because I thought the other medication Concerta worked longer ? A little warning on antibiotics as research and parents have found out with their child with autism . Yeast overgrowth caused by overuse of antibiotics, steroids, hormones, antidrepressants,or sugar . This is something that I'm looking into for my son at this time . I've seen the children of the parents that have gone this route with good results . I've cut out sugar and some dairy products, this also has helped my son.The only problem with this is that 's Ped. doctor thinks its bogus.I've seen changes on my son and I won't change anything for now . So luck with with his meds. As for when our family cares for our kids , yes , it has helped sometimes to understand what we go through . There are certain family I can trust or feel at ease knowing that my son will be supervised and well-taken care of . Both my husband and I come from a large family . Mine are in Tx. and my husbands are in Ind . One of my husbands brother lives here in San and we could count on him too . Yes, time goes fast and glad you found what information you would like to help your son, from the conference . You have so much information out there , plus you have us that can relate what you're child is going through . Did you ever check out the website I had given to you before ? It had some parent-training classes for about $15.00(?) on behaviour , SI , in Plano . Sorry to blab, blab so much . I'm planning a trip out there , the beg. of Aug. . If you want to meet us oldie's , and I . My oldest son lives near the Galleria area in Dallas . I'll understand if you can't as school is starting around the corner . Just wanted to take to visit the FTW Zoo , before school starts. But if it does not work out , then there are other time when the temperature starts to cool down . Take Care . Our doc wants to start Gabs on Prozac but I have decided to wait to see how she responds to the behavioral interventions that will be in place this year. Of course I change my mind everyday so... Guest guest
It's called Friday NITE Friends. The child is brought to this place for the whole evening where volunteers, and a leader in charger in each room to know the child's needs is kept, while the parents have fun on their own like a dinner, movies. etc. It gives the parents a night to themselves, a relieve for not caring for their child with special needs 24/7. I'm thinking of doing it this Friday. The website about it is http://www.tsbvi.edu/Outreach/seehear/spring01/nite.ht It's not in my city, about 15-20 min away, it's in Plano, TX. --- ICANFIELD@... wrote: > Hi , > Never heard of it but it sounds cool . Guest guest
Irma, Hope that you get to go back to San soon so you won't miss it too much. How far is it from where you are? I think it's either 5 or 6 hours driving distance from here. I'm glad that likes driving. I think any person who's traveling far needs something to keep them busy. Yeah, thanks. Well I don't know what you mean by Traditional stuff. All I did was drink champainge(sp) when the ball striked midnight on the eastern cost. I don't know, for like 3 days I've been getting headaches in the evening. I usually get them if I wake up too many times during the night, or just if I'm outdoors a lot, etc. It's strange. ===== __________________________________________________

Yeah, a middle school teacher of mine- said to about the black eyed pea thing- and I should try it. No I don't usually take anything with headaches, unless their really bad that I could upchuck. Yeah, I'm getting plenty of rest- 10 hours each night. Thanks anyways for caring. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Well Irma, I just got the electric toothbrush we are working with it.....Tara recentl had oral surgery wher they fixed everything under the sun. So now she has a beautifult mouth and we will maintain it whether she likes it or not. Tara does not like me touching her hair at all she has medium length hair and she refuses anyone to touch her but me she knows MOMMY does not play. She loves water she takes like four baths a day when we are home for the weekends. Recently, I took her to a play gym and she loved it so much I was so proud of her she was climbing through the mazes like a pro. We were ther for four hours and when it was time to leave this was the first time she ever through a tantrum. Everyone was staring but I didn't care I was very firm and explained to her that it was time to leave. I recently received Repite care so I have a woman come to my house every other Saturday for four hours so we go places together me my son the worker Audrey and of course Tara. Tara hates the movies she only likes to eat t he popcorn once the popcorn is done so is the movie according to her. She s attending a new school until I find a private school this school is six children one teacher 2 assistants and she has her own aide all day. The school is beautiful lets see how the program goes. Tara is six and she is really starting to get strong I am a little concerned about her strenght but lets see. So now she has a beautifult mouth and we will maintain it whether she likes it or not. This is great news, everything worked on. Glad to read about Tara's teeth. You must of found a good dentist. I guess the grinding would just be relieving tension. Luck with the electric toothbrush lets see if it'll help cut down on the grinding. >> Tara does not like me touching her hair at all she has medium length hair and she refuses anyone to touch her but me she knows MOMMY does not play. So will Tara let you put pig-tails on her or a ponytail? Dealing with a boy here . was the same way in the past. When he was younger he always had long hair. It was a nightmare when I would take hime to the hair salon, starting with the water spray. It took some work when I found out it was a sensory issue and had to work around it. He behaves beautiful now, just like today. My husband never wanted to take to the hair salon because he did not have enough patience or he would get embarrased. But, today my dh, 's bro Rick, & him went out together to get their haircut and that was an accomplishment. I stayed home and when they had returned, it was nice for once his dad was able to take him out with no fuss. >> She loves water she takes like four baths a day when we are home for the weekends. Yes, loves to climb or enjoy tunnels. also would throw fits and I would have to chase him down and carry him out, with his shoes off. When he was younger, though. I don't know if maybe because he is older and he probably understands he is now cooperating. I have to tell him that if he wants to play that mom says " time to go " then he would have to stop playing. He's been pretty good lately about it. Since Tara enjoyed it very much maybe you could use a pic of it and use it for future rewarding, but do be prepare for when it is time to leave. That takes time to understand the " time to leave " . I use do the same as what you've mentioned, so nah do what you have to do, especially at this age, she'll start to understand. >> I recently received Repite care so I have a woman come to my house every other Saturday for four hours so we go places together me my son the worker Audrey and of course Tara. Does she like regular TV shows or only videos? has only enjoyed watching Disney videos but has graduated to some action videos. At the theatres it depends which movie and he does great watching them at the age of 12. In the past he hated it because of the loudness. It took some time for him to finally sit through a movie, though. That is too cute on the popcorn, but I bet Tara's brother hates it because she is ready to leave or is he too young to understand? >> She's attending a new school until I find a private school this school is six children one teacher 2 assistants and she has her own aide all day. This was one of the reasons of needing to search for answers as was getting older, & stronger. > Tell me about he is a teenager what do I have to look forward to? > > You're actually doing wonderful for now as a parent. You've noticed what areas that need to be addressed. Time will tell when Tara becomes a teenager. There is hope, more cooperation, involved more with self-help skills, interacting with others, by joining and playing some games with others becoming a little independent. Has cut down on running or wondering off, this is though. I know there is more to add on but this will do for now as we're still working on the self-dressing, toileting, practicing certain sport events for Special Olympics. Writing his name, and of course understanding and following picture schedule. I was not aware of the second dx until was 12 yrs.old. What a journey and he has come a long way. This group has been very supportive. Sorry so long. Irma, 13,DS/ASD
Guest guest
: Well Transition I don't know if that is the right word with Tara and i but every morning we take a trip to the bathroom at this point she is crying already because she knows what's coming I but the brush in er had and with my help we brush together. She is crying and screaming I tell her over and over what a good girl she is. Luck for the electric toothbrush it does the job quick and I see results but she doesn't spit the water out so I have to take a wash cloth put listerine on it and wipe off whatever didn't come out. I am not sure if she will ever cooperate but I am hoping oneday she wakes up in the morning and wants to bruch her teeth. I will keep you posted

It is so wonderful to hear progress from our children and it only makes us strive for more I am glad that the haircut went well. Yes Tara where's pony tails that is her trademark. I am going to start the whole pic book I have read so much about it. Where do you get your pic from can you give me advice on how to start the book? Tara is a major Barney fan she repeats his name all the time and Molly the Comfy Couch. Last year we took Tara to see Barney and she jumped from her seat and started running towards the stage and all these security men were blocking her it was just so funny that Barney has security. > > Acording to them they have experience but there is no ABA so I am only > This group is the best I tell everone that i am so content that i can speak to someone who can actually relate instead of feeling sorry for me.
