I don't have that. I don't think it's necessary. All residents are evaluated for

eating ability and amt of supervision needed. If they have dysphagia or are

prone to choking, or on a pureed diet dt edentulous, PB is not allowed (although

the flavor could be) unless made really soft and creamy and non-sticky, which

can be done. That would be in the preparation instructions. AS my own policy,

we're very careful serving PB especially in sandwiches, so I prefer none for

snacks bc they eat those unsupevised mostly. I've had chokings and even deaths

when this has been disregarded.

Help with policy on peanut butter in nursing homes

State is in to my long term care facility and they would like to see our

policy on peanut butter usage. Does any one have one?

I have some philisophical differences with the DSM there so an outside opinion

would be helpful.

THANK YOU! I have a dietary manager that thinks since it has no lumps it is OK

for all purees. Of course she also has questioned if I know what I am doing on

fluid restrictions and refuses to fix mistakes because it would be " an admission

of guilt " . Took the DSM course and now knows everything. Very frustrating.

I hope she never has to see the cadaver after a choking death, or be deposed to

answer why she served PB to a pureed diet w/o IDT evaluation and input.

I would put it in her court. Sign a policy stating it will not be served and

give to the director, then if she serves it and someone has issues she is

responsible, and let her know that is exactly what you will be doing.
