Vitamin C May Reduce Blood Glucose and Lipids in Patients with Type 2

Diabetes

insulin in type 2 diabetes patients, " Afkhami-Ardekani M,

Shojaoddiny-Ardekani A, et al, Indian J Med Res, 2007; 126(5): 471-4.

(Address: Diabetes Research Center, Shahid Sadoughi University of

Medical Sciences & Health Services, Yazd, Iran).

Summary: In a study involving 84 patients (mean age: 52.3 years) with

type 2 diabetes mellitus, supplementation with 1000 mg/day of vitamin C

for a period of 6 weeks was found to significantly reduce fasting blood

glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, serum insulin, and glycated

hemoglobin (HbA(1c)). In the study, subjects were randomly divided into

2 groups. One group received 500 mg/day vitamin C while the other group

received 1000 mg/day vitamin C, both for a period of 6 weeks. While

subjects who received 500 mg/day did not show any significant

improvements in glucose, insulin, and lipid levels, subjects who

received 1000 mg/day vitamin C showed significant decreases in fasting

blood glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol level, HbA(1c), and serum

insulin levels. The authors conclude, " …Supplementation with 1000 mg/day

of vitamin C in addition to the normal diet and treatment schedule may

help in improving plasma glucose and lipid profile in patients with type

2 diabetes. " This, in turn, may reduce the risk of micro- and macro-

vascular complications associated with diabetes.
