Is there a lactation consultant (preferably an IBCLC) at your facility? What

about in your area? You can look them up at:

http://www.ilca.org/falc.html. They

should be more up to date with research in that area.

There also is another listserv called Lactnet that is very informative and

is mainly made up of IBCLCs. I have learned a lot from them and there are

some RD's on there too.

Now for my experience, my kids got gassy (not colic) with certain foods, and

my third child presented the gassy symptoms her second night in the hospital

after a friend brought me a big homecooked meal with onions, broccoli, bell

peppers and beans. I think it is more important for a mother to be aware

that these foods could trigger gassiness, so that if the kids are gassy they

don't conclude there is something " wrong " with their milk. But there is not

much of a point in eliminating those at the hospital, since it appears there

is a wide variation.

I nursed both of my kids for a year each. I ate my usual diet that included lots

of spicey foods, beans, cauliflower etc. They never had any issues. I did avoid

caffeine and alcohol- that's it.

Moms are in the hospital for such a short time, often their milk has not come in

yet.

I disagree. I breastfed two babies, also. Based on nutrition texts at

the time, what the mother eats is completely digested before milk is

made. N Scheer, MSRDLD
