Guest guest
Hi Theresa, I did some research on this when I had my son a year ago and there is indeed evidence that spicy foods can add a bit of spice to breastmilk, and my sister told me she saw a direct relationship between when she ate something gassy like beans and when her baby had colic. However, eliminating onions, garlic, gassy vegetables, black pepper and other spices from my own diet did not cure my son's colic and my lactation consultant was of the opinion that Mom's diet has little effect on the baby. As Karann mentioned, every baby is different. As for hospital meals, I wouldn't go too crazy restricting the menu, especially in light of the facts that Moms don't produce much breastmilk in the first 2-3 days after birth anyway, and if a baby has colic it doesn't usually begin until they are several weeks old... so the few meals a Mom has in the hospital will probably not have any effect on the baby. Also, keep in mind that people of some cultures find food too bland and even inedible if they can't add spice like black pepper to it. And lastly, I don't know about everyone else, but after going through days of labor and not being allowed to eat or drink throughout, I was HUNGRY and wanted to eat as soon as I gave birth. Having someone cross off my choice on a selective menu would really annoy me. I would just give the moms education material as Karann said and let them make their own decisions about what and what not to eat. Guest guest
Thanks and Karann. I am so with you - I just have to explore why the nurse feels so adamant about having us cross off those items! She is now pushing it and saying she now wants us to avoid serving any spicy foods. Having your feedback really helps. I have been searching numerous websites tonight and can't find much. I will ask her for the evidence and see what she comes up with! Thanks so much, Theresa Re: Cloned meat > > Jen, > Disturbed is an understatement! > This is enough reason (for me) to adopt a vegetarian > diet once again! > It makes me angry that the government can determine > (TWEAK) our food supply and then not allow the > individual to make a conscious choice on what he/she > decides to eat! > > Dani N Little, MS, RD, CD > University of Washington Medical Center > Seattle, WA. > > --- Jen Zingaro <jzingarocnydc (DOT) com> wrote: > > > Okay, so the FDA says that cloned meat is safe. > > I heard on the today show that this cloned meat > > doesn't need to be > > labeled. > > > > I could have sworn that I had heard some time ago > > that it needed to be > > labeled. > > This is troubling to me. Guest guest
Speaking from my own experience of long term breastfeeding (>2 years) for both of my children, neither of my children seemed to be bothered at all by spicy or gassy foods. But my second child would spit up what seemed like all of her milk after nursing and, after eliminating a variety of things without it helping, I finally discovered that it was dairy products that seemed to cause this. I eliminated all milk, yogurt, ice cream, cheese, etc. from my diet and she never had any trouble after that. Even when she was a little older like 7 or 8 months, if I had a piece of cheese on my sandwich it would affect her. When she began drinking cow's milk after age 1 and was still breastfeeding a little, she seemed to do fine with dairy. She is 16 now and dairy is no problem. So, yeah, I agree with everyone who responded--you can't say that for everyone certain foods will cause problems with breastfeeding. , MS, RD, LDN Re: Re: breastfeeding moms Hi Theresa, I did some research on this when I had my son a year ago and there is indeed evidence that spicy foods can add a bit of spice to breastmilk, and my sister told me she saw a direct relationship between when she ate something gassy like beans and when her baby had colic. Guest guest
Is there a lactation consultant (preferably an IBCLC) at your facility? What about in your area? You can look them up at: http://www.ilca.org/falc.html. They should be more up to date with research in that area. There also is another listserv called Lactnet that is very informative and is mainly made up of IBCLCs. I have learned a lot from them and there are some RD's on there too. Now for my experience, my kids got gassy (not colic) with certain foods, and my third child presented the gassy symptoms her second night in the hospital after a friend brought me a big homecooked meal with onions, broccoli, bell peppers and beans. I think it is more important for a mother to be aware that these foods could trigger gassiness, so that if the kids are gassy they don't conclude there is something " wrong " with their milk. But there is not much of a point in eliminating those at the hospital, since it appears there is a wide variation. -Renata > Thanks and Karann. Guest guest
I understand from my daughters who breast fed that it's alomost guaranteed that anything the mother eats will affect the nursing infant. It makes sense to me. Digna Re: Cloned meat Jen, Disturbed is an understatement! This is enough reason (for me) to adopt a vegetarian diet once again! Guest guest
Hi All, Although the taste of the milk may be affected, the baby will get used to it, but primarily we are talking after the first few days. Remember, it is colostrum that is produced first, and often the baby is barely taking in anything; they are just learning. It is very important to support the mom and not make her nervous the first few days, before her milk really comes in, and feeding is more challenging (my opinion based on experience). It is likely that, if the baby is gassy from the first few days at breast, he/she is swallowing air and probably has little to do with mom's diet. They just aren't very good at feeding yet. All the best, Sharon Staier, MS, RD Family and Sports Nutrition Cape Cod, MA Vicky Bean wrote: Another perspective.... I grew up on a dairy farm where the cows were somewhat " free-range " .
