Love MD Answers Your Questions

Question:

Do the recent findings about increased risk of heart disease with HRT

apply to " bioidentical " hormones, such as Estrace and Prometrium, or to

synthetic hormones? Do you think bioidentical hormones are any safer

than synthetic ones?

You're very welcome, Kathi.

It's a tough call. In my opinion, for someone with no bone problems and

few risk factors for osteoporosis, it would be hard to justify HRT for a

long period of time, if at all. Also, the emerging evidence seems to

indicate that there's no bone benefit that results from taking both HRT

and a bisphosphonate as opposed to just one of the two.

But you, of course, are a special case. Are you on some sort of

antiresorptive med right now?

I'll tell you where to go!
