Guest guest
So happy to hear your UAE is over with, Darby. You waited so long. Hope your pain subsides quickly. Everyone's reaction is different, as you know. Best of luck to you. Guest guest
Hi, Darby. I just responded to you on embo, but wanted to add I also took a while to stop bleeding. I also had my UAE done at Lennox Hill by Javit and I think the assistant putting pressure on the artery for 20 mins. must be standard because that's how long Javit had him hold it for me. Then, when they moved me from the table to the gurney, I moved my leg and it started bleeding again. Javit came and looked at it and told the poor guy he had to press the artery for another 7 minutes. Making small talk with a guy with his finger pressed in my groin was not something covered in my social training -- awkward. Anyhow, I did wind up with a huge hematoma running about half way down to my knee. It gradually faded. I think part of the reason the hematoma was so big was that I used the bed pan a few times during the 7 hours I was supposed to keep my leg straight, and even though I tried to keep the leg as still as possible while rolling on and off the bed pan, I had to move around some. I was surprised in reading how many women had catheters inserted for the procedure, since I didn't, but now I know why they do use them. About a week after I had the UAE, I noticed a hard lump in my groin just under the incision site. I called Javit and he had me come right in and examined it. He said it could either be a hematoma (even though no bruising showed on the surface) or it could be something called a pseudoanyeurism, in which case it would need to be surgically reduced. I had a doppler ultrasound and it turned out to be just a hematoma. It went away over time. Guest guest
Thanks Leonie, I definitely think I have a hematoma. Very sore at that site. Guest guest
Oh Darby...you're not a wimp! Look how long you've waited for this procedure with all kinds of symptoms plaguing you. Don't think for 1 minute that you're a wimp! They don't really think there's any relationship of size of fibroids to pain but they don't really know either as they haven't bothered to look into that side of the issue for their clinical trials. Too busy simply trying to help women out of the pain! Also, it can be dependent on a person's tolerance to different meds and not have anything at all to do with the UAE itself. I know that my taking pain killers for an entire year before my procedure must certainly have played a role in the ineffectiveness of morphine for my pain. Did they prescribe you motrin at all? You can get it OTC and it seemed to help me a lot with cramps. I think I took prescription motrin (800 mg dosage) off and on for about 2 weeks post procedure. Then, was able to switch to the lighter dosage I could buy at the store. Each tab is only 200 mg. I also always keep a bottle with me these days--just in case. If Dr. Javit didn't prescribe it, perhaps you could ask him about it? Also, Leonie is right about the potential for hematoma. You should definitely stay close in touch with Javit on that. I think the assistant who worked with Dr. Goodwin on my UAE had to press down for about 20 minutes as well. I felt sorry for the guy cuz it didn't look like fun. Dr. Goodwin distracted me the whole time by talking to me. You do want to be cautious with your activity level and take it slow and easy and keep in touch with Javit. Why doesn't Javit use a catheter to catch the urine? Is it because he expects to discharge most patients the same day and doesn't feel it necessary? Or, is it something to do with the infection rate? Did he discuss it with you pre-UAE? I never had to move at all (thanks to the catheter) and it was worth it, I think. (Although it was unpleasant getting it inserted -- but not painful or anything like that.) Sorry you weren't one of " the lucky ones " who get up and walk away with a big grin and no pain. It sucks. But, from here on out it should only get better Darby. Hang in there. Guest guest
Darby, glad you finally had your procedure done. Dr. Javit did mine also on March 29th of this year. I also had very bad pain and was given hydrocodene. Darby I'm curious did Dr. Javit ask you to come in for a three month sonogram post op, because he didn't ask me I had to insist on it. All in all I'm feeling rather well and very happy I had the procedure done. I will be going for my sonogram within the month so I can at that time tell you about shrinkage. Hang in there and keep us posted. Guest guest
Dear Carla, Thanks for your reply. Yes, motrin was suggested, no more than 2400 mgs. a day. But it is the combination of motrin and codeine that seems to work. Have had some low grade fever too, no more than 100. I am glad I didn't have a cathether because the only other time I had one I got a UTI and since then I had a UTI that travelled up into my kidneys. I didn't mind the bedpan bit at all really. As for a hematoma, that will be pretty obvious if it developes. Anyway, today, My pain relief dosages came at much longer intervals, so I must be getting better...also I left the city and am resting in the country, which is quiet and peaceful. Am very tired and my whole body is sore from locking itself up to guard against the cramps. Some constitpation, which I expected. He told me milk of magnesia, though I have some herbal stuff which also works. I am still very pleased by this whole thing...I know that it is preferable to major surgery. Guest guest
Dear Barbara, No follow up was suggested at all. I asked about it during the initial interview, but he said to follow up with my gyn. I'm glad I'm not the only one who had alot of pain....also I'm glad to hear that you feel alot better in general, that's basically what I'm going for, improved overall feeling of health.
