carla,

i don;t know if this is the address you tried for stringer, but try this one:

stringer@...

all these guys are media/$$ hounds. ironically it was stringer who told me,

re hyst, " honey, there's $10,000 in your pelvis -- don;t you think some

doctor wants to get his hands on that? "

on the other hand, he *is* widely regarded as one of the country's foremost

laparoscopic surgeons, esp. for fibroids. i suspect the uae thing is purely

a way to get in on another market niche -- and not lose potential revenue.

the newsletter biz is just revolting, but sad to say, he's in good company

with lots of hospitals, john lee, vicki hufnagel and others marketing their

med practices under the guise of providing objective info -- hah!!!

Here is a link on Dr. Stringer's site in which he speaks of

possible problems with UAE.

It is a synopsis of a news report that I read several months ago.

In his newsletter that was sent to me, there is only mention in 1 paragraph about UAE as a choice. It's in the " Ask the Doctor " section.

Q I had my fibroids removed 5 years ago and now I have another one. What procedure would you recommend?

A Again, MYOMECTOMY would be the standard procedure assuming you wish to remain fertile. Another procedure, UTERINE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION, is extremely effective. In this procedure the artery that supplies the fibroid is blocked, thus cutting off the blood supply and allowing the fibroid to shrink. This procedure, however, is not recommended for women who wish to have more children.

When I read the above, I had a gut instinct that the man is attempting to capture the market of women looking into UAE and, quite possibly, steer them to myomectomy. I got the same impression from his website. The info on the link you provided about ischemic condition of uterus or bladder, does not indicate that currently the risk of those items occurring is around 1/2 percent. MUCH lower than similar risks (of losing your uterus or having bladder damage during surgery) with myomectomy. Makes it hard for a woman to truly have " informed " knowledge without that little bit of extra information, doesn't it?

I've put in a call to Dr. Stringer and emailed him as well. I want to better gauge the info from actual personal contact with the man. I've also put in a call to Dr. Leef (the IR he refers women who want UAE to). His email at the University of Chicago Hospital isn't working yet as they're still constructing the website. He doesn't list an alternate email address or webpage on SCVIR. Among other things, I want to find out how many UAEs the man has actually performed--and how many of those were referrals from Dr. Stringer's group.

I got the same impression, Carla. If I knew nothing about UAE and read

the insert at Dr. Stringer's web site, I think it might definitely tend to

color my view with reference to UAE. A bit of a scare tactic, to put it

mildly.
