(Address: Dept of Internal Medicine, Ospedale Garibaldi-Nesima, University of Catania, Italy). Summary: In a study involving 40 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, results indicate that supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs) may exert beneficial effects. The patients were randomized to an AHA recommended diet supplemented with omega-3 PUFAs (2g/d) (n=20) or an AHA diet alone (n=20), for a period of 6 months. At intervention end, patients in the omega-3 PUFAs-supplemented group showed a decrease in alanine aminotransferase, triglycerides, serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels and HOMA(IR). Additionally, complete fatty liver regression was observed in 33.4% of patients in the omega-3 PUFAs-supplemented group, and an overall reduction in 50% of the patients. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, " Our results indicate that alanine aminotransferase, triglyceride and serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels, as well as fatty liver improved after polyunsaturated fatty acid administration.
