hello fellow RD's

I started seeing this new client who reports is a " stress eater " -

has lots of cravings and has tried a variety of programs from

Overeaters Annonymous, Food Addicts annonymous, all sorts of diets

etc and still has not been able to make healthy long term changes to

her habits. I don't have much experience w eating disorders but from

what she told me those groups were more like cults and from them she

has become even more obsessed with food and eating. I'd love to help

her, however I am not sure in which approach to take- is there a

book or article you recommend? Has any of you heard of Kay

Sheppard? (my client mentioned her name a few times)

Thanks a lot

You can find out about her at www.KaySheppard.com. She has an MA degree, LMHC

(licensed Mental Health COunselor) and CEDS (certified

eating disorder specialist from the International Association of Eating disorder

Specialists. She has written books and has a Food Plan based on

eliminating addictive foods, recommends having a sponsor and attend meetings-

similiar to AA.

For this type of client who has tried this diet and that food plan I

would really recommend Geneen Roth's work. She deals with emotional

eating and more of the non-diet approach to weight control. It is

much like an eating disorder in that focusing on the food avoids her

addressing the other issues in her life. I would really suggest she

enter counseling to look at the whole picture and discover what it is

she is trying to cover up with her overeating. I have had clients

keep food journals with information about their feelings/emotions

during stress eating that has been helpful - however if that makes the

client more obsess with food then that would not be a good idea.
