Guest guest
Hi Margaret, I DO have to see a podiatrist as I am certain that I'd get about the same thing you did in terms of an orthotic! I did find some Dr School for arthritis in the back and knees (?) things from the drug store which work fairly well, but not all the time; what I mean to say is that after I've been out wearing shoes or boots -more often boots; no heel or not much to speak of!- putting on my sandals which I've finally started wearing 'around the house'. They are a brand called Teva and astoundingly comfortable. (Poor sandals have taken a real beating and are not cheap)! Have a feeling you are likely correct; my mom had arthritis. Many operations on her feet (may have written this before but I forgot!) as she had 'shoes with lots of history' growing up. (Meaning hand me down shoes always). She had arthritis in places one who gardened a LOT would as well. (Something of a fanatic, but gorgeous and in some cases elaborate gardens). I do not yet know about my right knee .. found out that my ortho guy who I see for my left shoulder has ordered the MRI not on the shoulder but the right knee (have fallen full weight on it rather often and sometimes it just .. hurts other than fibro stuff for utterly no reason). It's getting x-rayed as well... Although he is a surgeon, he tends not to lean to surgery except as a last resort. Tries to utilize the physical therapy people so .. might be that. Maybe I will stop putting off the podiatrist and just .. go in hopes that it will not be some awful thing involving surgery! Also; I think that there was legal action of some kind toward the maker of that drug you mentioned in your other post; the one where you get to see double. (What a lot of fun it is, eh? I just loved seeing triple! Fortunately for me it did go away)... Just saying; there might well have been a class action aspect to the case; the maker was I think our Pfizer pfriends or that company had bought the company which made Neurotin.. Thanks so much for posting and giving me a bit more courage to go to -sigh!- still another doctor!! Jane, the one with the hound, NYC > > Hi Jane, > > About your right foot and the pain that comes from your big toe... > > I have a lot of arthritis in both feet including the big toes. I used to have a lot of pain in the big toes and they would also lock up once in a while. The foot doc told me I would probably have to have joint replacement in " five years or so " about 8 years ago. > > Then he prescribed new orthotics (custom shoe inserts) for me. I have worn a soft gel type of orthotic since the early 90s when I found out that I have several birth defects in my feet. Anyway, the doc specified that they thin the orthotic below the big toe to take pressure off them and it worked wonderfully. I have very little pain from the big toes any more and they only lock up once in a very long time. (I also wear athletic shoes all the time. I never wear dress shoes that are bad for my feet.) > > I also have bad arthritis in the base of my thumb (where the thumb connects to the wrist) and was told I would need joint reconstruction. I went from using a computer mouse to using a trackball and the pain went away completely. > > I have arthritis in other areas and I am now a firm believer that we stress certain joints by our mannerisms and habits and if we can change those things, we can relieve the stress on the joints. It won't work forever but can give years and years of relief without meds. > > Anyway, back to your big toe, check into getting gel-type custom orthotics or even try buying the thickest of the ones you can get at the drug store and thin the area right under the big toe joint yourself. Hope this helps! > > Margie >
Guest guest
Hi Jane, I am sure you have already covered this but I can't help wondering about Lymes when I read your symptoms. It is not easy to get an accurate test for Lymes but before getting surgery on any joints it might be worth trying to determine if Lymes is part of the problem. Hope you and your hound are doing OK! Guest guest
Hi Bev, Thanks, but Dr Enlander has checked for that previously... At one point something really weird called Rocky Mountain Non Spotted Fever showed up, but .. current blood work shows that only certain stuff -my usual culprits- are high. Only thing not that per usual was that vitamin D was low, so ... am fixing this(taking more~!). A cool thing with the ortho guy is that he is really not into surgery except as a last resort which is a refreshing thing to hear from a guy who is way up there in this particular hospital's excellent ortho department. (I think as highly of him as I do of Dr Enlander which is saying a great deal)!! Thanks much and hope you are doing well, Jane, the one with the hound, NYC > > > > Hi Margaret, > > > > I DO have to see a podiatrist as I am certain that I'd get about the same thing you did in terms of an orthotic!
