Pylori http://www.vitasearch.com/CP/weeklyupdates/ Reference: " The effect of probiotics on Helicobacter pylori eradication, " Park SK, Park DI, et al, Hepatogastroenterology, 2007; 54(79): 2032-6. (Address: Department of Internal Medicine, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Jongno-gu, Seoul 110-746, Korea). Summary: In a study involving 352 patients infected with Helicobacter pylori, supplementation with probiotics was found to improve drug compliance, reduce side effects, and enhance the intention-to-treat eradication rate of H. pylori. Subjects were randomized into 2 groups. One group received probiotics (bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus faecium) plus standard triple therapy (2 antibiotics plus a proton pump inhibitor), while the other group received standard triple therapy alone. Probiotics were given for 8 weeks. Four weeks after completion of therapy, results of intention to treat analysis found that subjects in the probiotics group experienced higher eradication of H. pylori (83.5%), compared to subjects in the triple therapy alone group (73.3%). Side effects of triple therapy, including diarrhea, were more common in the triple therapy alone group. Results of this study suggest that adding probiotic supplementation to standard pharmacological therapy used to treat H. pylor i infection ('triple therapy') may enhance eradication of H. pylori and reduce side effects, thereby rendering treatment more tolerable and effective. -- ne Holden, MS, RD " Ask the Parkinson Dietitian " http://www.parkinson.org/ " Eat well, stay well with Parkinson's disease " " Parkinson's disease: Guidelines for Medical Nutrition Therapy " http://www.nutritionucanlivewith.com/
