Guest guest
Hi Mick and others, Hmm, sometimes the govt makes me nuts. HOW can the UL for calcium be the SAME for a 2 year old child as for a 5' 100# 30 y/o woman as it is for a man that's 6'6 " tall and weighs 230 pounds??? Just NEVER made sense to me! Anybody help me understand how that can be so? If the UL for a 100# man is 2500 mg/day, shouldn't it be a lot higher for somebody with double the bone mass? The Tolerable Upper Limit (UL) is the highest level of daily intake of calcium from food, water and supplements that is likely to pose no risks of adverse health effects to almost all individuals in the general population [_2_ (http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/factsheets/calcium.asp#en2) ]. The UL for children and adults ages 1 year and older (including pregnant and lactating women) is 2500 mg/day. It was not possible to establish a UL for infants under the age of 1 year. I have books that state it is best absorbed when it is no more than 500mg at a time, but the pharmacist wants to see something more concrete than that simple statement. W. No good answer for your question - but just a reminder that there's plenty of research that shows that unless Vit D levels are adequate, Calcium won't be properly absorbed either. With approx 60% of the US population VIt D deficient, no wonder we're seeing so much osteopenia/porosis.
