Guest guest
    Hi my names , I'm 29 MELD score of 7, it has to be 10 for me to get on the transplant list I guess. So I would say 11 isn't exactly good but I have heard of as high as 17 before. It's a combination of results of his bloodwork. Look up meld score and it will say what results in his blood work you have to add up to come up with the meld score. I believe its the combination of three things.      I have stage 4 cirrhosis of my liver, not even diagnosed a year ago. Also have autoimmune hepatitis which is the cause of my cirrhosis. I never knew my whole life so 29 years of not knowing I have done some damage to my liver during my partying days. I have two little boys 2 and 6 years old and am so tired everyday. I haven't really posted on this site before but I read everyone elses posts. I take lactulose and all of you on it know...... it's no fun. I take potassium, spiralactalone, milk thistle, anti depressants and my platlets are at 33. Life isn't so fun right now. lol. I am currently in the hospital for pneumonia and It's hard to treat me because my liver is so bad. Been in the hospital for a week now.... I'm wondering if any of you have any advise on hepatatic encephaly, I get it a lot even with the lactulose, confused, disoriented, forgettfully " foggy brained " .....     I also am a Medical Assistant and a Caregiver so it is hard for me to be a patient. lol. Anyways, I hope I helped you in answering your question a little bit....                                         \                                         \                                         \                                         \              ________________________________ To: livercirrhosissupport Sent: Wednesday, May 9, 2012 8:27 AM Subject: meld scores  My husband is said by his doctor to have the meld score of 11. Guest guest
My hubby was diagnosed 7 years ago. His MELD is currently 10.....but he has compensated liver function,. His specialist says he has to be at least a MELD of 15 ....but that's at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation.....Hospitals can differ on what their MELD score is to be listed.                                                                           Love,Jill  We don't remember days, we remember moments. Guest guest
I'm so sorry that this has happened while you still have a lot of life to live yet!! Honestly, I think that any of us that have a hepatic liver, for whatever the cause, had our party days. But, we just didn't know and in my case, I'm not sure that it would have stopped me at your age. It took me another 6 yrs to finally put a plug in the jug and then another 15 yrs to find out about the Hep C. I'm not really popular by saying this; but, your story is one of the reasons that I've never been interested in having a transplant. I'm on the other side of 60 and don't have little ones around. In fact, my one and only child hasn't even reproduced yet and is not very interested in doing so. LOL Instead, after having a liver resection and the cancer coming back in 15 months, I have totally accepted my future. I am not having the least problem with it. Do you have help at home with your boys? I know that it can't be easy at all. Guest guest
Gloria,     Yes I have help with my two boys. My boyfriend's sister watches my youngest while I go to work mon-sat. My oldest son lives with his dad in California due to the fact that it is so hard for me to have both of them. I just don't have the energy to devote as much attention as they each deserve to have both of them. That was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. I am very lucky his dad is an amazing father. I get my oldest for the whole summer and any holiday's I want. It's a three hour drive to meet his dad halfway from where I live in Arizona to Yuma.     The past two days I have been super itchy! any advise? It's driving me nuts.                                         \                                         \                                         \                                         \           ________________________________ To: " livercirrhosissupport " <livercirrhosissupport > Sent: Friday, May 11, 2012 7:41 PM Subject: Re: MELD score and have a question for you all...,.  I'm so sorry that this has happened while you still have a lot of life to live yet!! Guest guest
I can really believe that it is difficult having a 2 yr old and getting sick. I would not have been able to do it. But, I'm much older than you are. My family was supposed to understand why I couldn't do things with the kids. Most of them had no problems with it. Usually, I'm on support groups for Hep C! That's what took my liver down to stage 4. However, you have my empathy for your Auto-Immune. But, be easy on yourself regarding the partying. If any of us could go back and change some things we all would hey?? Actually, I now hold firm that if even 1 little thing was changed in my past, I wouldn't be me today. Personally, for the itch - I use an anti-histamine called Novo-Pheniram. They are super cheap and work just fine. In fact, my mother has suffered from asthma that gets really bad. This year is the first time that the Novo didn't get it under control fast. My itch is just getting bad again, so I know the discomfort and irritability. I need to start remembering to have the pills on me all the time. Doesn't look very good if I forget I'm in public and I haul my shirt up to scratch my growing belly. LOL Another really good thing I've used is plain old Petroleum Jelly. It sure never harmed a baby that I know of. I would just towel dry gently after a shower and then apply the jelly. I never had a case of being slimy because my body would soak the jelly in really fast. But, I do see that Vaseline has a couple of lotions now. I haven't tried them again yet; but, I will soon enough. I live on the island that is just off the west coast of Canada and Washington State. I promise you that you have to love rain, in order to live. I always say that's the reason we have big trees. Anyway, the fall and the early winter will be the time that my skin dries out the worst. Weird!! But, I know that I could never make it in Arizona. Even when I was healthy, being a snowbird in the winter would not have been Arizona. LOL ________________________________  Gloria,     Yes I have help with my two boys. Guest guest
Hi Gloria uses an anti histamine for the itch. Turmeric is also useful for that. Then staying cool helps. Heat makes it worse. The kinds of material in your clothes can also cause itch. I usually find something soft to wear. If you wash with laundry detergent the detergent stays in your clothes and can cause problems. I use something called Laundry Pure which is a device that attaches to the washer and it puts oxygen into the water to form peroxides which washes out dirt. Hope any of this is helpful. Guest guest
Yes, I forgot about the brand of laundry detergent. My son was born with excema from his head to his toes. Didn't take long to learn that baby products (oil and powder) were a definite no no. The absolute worst was those Bounce sheets!! I am fairly sensitive to the detergents. Actually, I might have to look again at what I am using and take a break. ________________________________  Hi Gloria uses an anti histamine for the itch. Guest guest
I got an antihistimine today and nothing.still itching from head to toe. as for the heat, it's unavoidable. i live in az. 105 today. i use an free and clear laundry soap as i have for years because i always thought i was allergic to the soap before i found out about my liver issues, and i always put it on a second rinse.the itching is really making me super irritable and hard to take a nap or sleep at night when i'm clawing my skin off. its one of the most frustrating symptoms besides the fatigue. cold showers help but only while i'm in the shower. as soon as i dry off it's like i never took a shower. just as itchy as before. sigh.....this all sucks! you scratch for a second and have the scars for a week. i try so hard not to scratch but sometimes its almost involuntary. i take so many medications i finally bought a morning, noon, eavning, night weekly pill box. sometimes i wonder if i'm on too many meds, are they all really necessary? who knows. i voluntarily choose not to take any pain medications since non of them are good for my liver. so i just put up with the pain from my liver, carpal tunnel, knee and back problems hoping it's helping a little to preven liver failer. i want to be around as long as i can for my kids withour being a burden on them. ________________________________ To: " livercirrhosissupport " <livercirrhosissupport > Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 9:55 AM Subject: Re: MELD score and have a question for you all...,. Guest guest
Kate,      My partner died back in nov 2009 from liver disease they gave him hrdoxyine pam it is a prescription antihistamine I use it for panic attacks but it is and old drug that is also used for itching and as far as i know safe for liver. It gave him and he recieved a lot of  relief Gloria, Yes I have help with my two boys. The past two days I have been super itchy! any advise? Guest guest
Perhaps try the Petroleum Jelly. You apply it all over after just pat drying in the shower. If that seems a little gross (I did it), I see that Vaseline has some new lotions now. You know, I found out at lunch today that it was 105 in Arizona. Too funny. It was 2 of our snowbirds. The ones that flock to Arizona in the winter. ________________________________  I got an antihistimine today and nothing.still itching from head to toe. as for the heat, it's unavoidable. i live in az. 105 today. i use an free and clear laundry soap as i have for years because i always thought i was allergic to the soap before i found out about my liver issues, and i always put it on a second rinse.the itching is really making me super irritable and hard to take a nap or sleep at night when i'm clawing my skin off. its one of the most frustrating symptoms besides the fatigue. cold showers help but only while i'm in the shower. as soon as i dry off it's like i never took a shower. just as itchy as before. sigh.....this all sucks! you scratch for a second and have the scars for a week. i try so hard not to scratch but sometimes its almost involuntary. i take so many medications i finally bought a morning, noon, eavning, night weekly pill box. sometimes i wonder if i'm on too many meds, are they all really necessary? who knows. i voluntarily choose not to take any pain medications since non of them are good for my liver. so i just put up with the pain from my liver, carpal tunnel, knee and back problems hoping it's helping a little to preven liver failer. i want to be around as long as i can for my kids withour being a burden on them. ________________________________ To: " livercirrhosissupport " <livercirrhosissupport > Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 9:55 AM Subject: Re: MELD score and have a question for you all...,.  Hi Gloria uses an anti histamine for the itch. Guest guest
Dear , I wanted to let you know that several of us here on this forum have chronic pain, especially from the liver and enlarged spleen etc, and take pain medicine regularly. You see, back in the 70's the government wanted to make pain medicine more available yet they wanted to make it less desireable to abuse, so they poisoned it . Yes, that's right , I said thay poisoned it! You see, pain medicines made from poppies are non toxic. The are not posionous to any organ or body tissue. Tylenol was added to hydrocodone to make a drug called vicodin, lortab, norco, etc, but the Tylenol is only in the drug to make it less desirable to abuse, because when drugs are abused, larger amounts are needed wih every dose, and the larger dose of Tylenol is supposed to eventually harm you, and therefor stop you from taking a large dose. Did you know that for a pain patient taking morphine there is no upward limit of drug? That is because morphine is non toxic in reasonable amounts. We who take non poisoned pain medicines have to seek a pain medicine doctor to get them, but a good pain doctor will treat you from a whole body aproach, not just write a prescription for you. If you have any more questions about this, just let me know,k? Suffering in pain is not a normal accepted part of liver disease, and pain is a disease all of it's own that can wreck your health by affecting your blood pressure, blood sugar, cortisol levels, etc.etc.etc..
