Guest guest
Jan That is a great story about your Dr. But, it sure shouldn't be surprising, hey?? After all, they are human as well. Some of them have even been bit by the Hep C virus. Up until this past January, I had been having terrible problems with falling. Sometimes it was scarey because I live alone. So, in an effort to try and find out why I was falling, I was sent to a Ophthalmologist. Good heavens, it takes 3 appointments to get a prescription. The 1st one I didn't even see hide nor hair of the Dr. I did see him on my 2nd visit and he made it very plain that I mustfill the prescription or he thought he could be morally libel if he didn't report me to Motor Vehicles. Maybe I can't see the sign a quarter of a mile away; but, I sure wasn't having any problems with my failing distance sight except at night. By the 3rd visit, I know he was thinking different about my sight. Then I was handed the prescription. However, I did something absolutely insanely wrong. I didn't want the extra expense of having graduating and settled for the bi-focals. I persevered with them for about a month and one afternoon I just threw them on my desk and went to the drug store and got some store bought.  I wear the prescription glasses around my neck; but, usually have the store boughts on because of the computer. However, the last time that I fell was not only right done on my nose and forehead on a cement floor; but, I knew then what was happening. There is too much of a time lap before my brain goes into gear to try and prevent the fall. That was one that it wouldn't have surprised me if I had to go to the hospital. I haven't had a fall since and not even a close call. Perhaps that bump on my noggin was what was needed to get the brain doing it's job. I am sorry to see that you suffer with holes in your stomach. I had an endoscopy just a short time ago and the Dr came out happy to say that I was even starting to have varises.  But, he enjoyed having a look at the scar from a past ulcer. He said it was shaped like a star. Whatever it takes to get the giggle for the day!! Gloria ________________________________  I had two endoscopies in two days about three weeks ago. The first day they found numerous holes in my stomach which they cauterized. Then they said I had to stay in the hospital overnight to have another one the next day to make sure the cauterizing had held. Then I had to stay in that day until afternoon blood work came back. My hemogloben was 9.4 when I went in,8.8 after the procedure and 8.4 when I went home. They wouldn't have let me go home if it had been 8 or below. I am wondering if they really did get them all since I have had trouble recovering and that is usually just a matter of a day or so, sometimes go shopping on the way home. Then when I saw my hemotologist after a week or so, he asked what medicine they had given me to fix my messed up stomach. I had heard them talking about a prescriptions, but hadn't gotten one. So, he gave me one, 1 G of Carafate which really knocked me for a loop, slept at least 18 hours a day, so called and they said to cut it in half. But still really foggy. Not sure if it is all from the meds, or if my hemogloben is worse. After reading a previous post, I am wondering if this bleeding is related to portal hypertension. How do you find out if you have it? Didn't know it could show up in the stomach. Have had some rectal bleeding from hemorrhoids, wondering if related I had been trying to get in to see my pcp because I had started having trouble with double vision. I was always told he was out sick. Guess who had the room across from me in the hospital. he had abdominal surgery the day I had my first endo. We were both waiting for the orders to go home on the afternoon of the second day when I noticed him over there. He came over and we talked. He said he would see me the next wednesday even though he wasn't working for 10 days, but had some paper work to do that day. (Nurse told me he didn't really have much and she thought he had driven 40 miles one way to come see me.) He ordered blood work for thyroid and lots of other things and turned out my thyroid meds were low, so he put me on 1 1/2 pills until they can do another blood test to find out exactly what I need. Life is so interesting. Getting an appt. to see your doctor when you are both patients in the hospital. lol. My eyes are a lot better, but at the least, I need a new prescription. Some friends and I have heard of a great doctor in Glendale and are hoping to make appts. the same day so we can share the driving. Guest guest
Gloria, I have a lot of pairs of glasses, one trifocal, progressive after trying with out progressive, the money was worth it. But I too have to have reading glasses to read, books or computer, and also to play the musical keyboard. Too many times I forget to change my glasses for driving, and until recently had to drive then without glasses. I thought I had passed the no glasses needed test until I went in to renew my license and saw it said glasses needed. I need new glasses now, and hope that will clear up my eyes, or maybe the time has come for cataract surgery. Will have to check it out. Sure don't like not feeling safe driving longer than just around this small town. I have fallen a number of times in the last 2 years, but none had to do with lack of balance, but rather with lack of concentration on where i was going, getting a shoe caught in a broken door mat, stepping on strings on my flats, missing a curb I knew was there, and a step I had just recently gone down, forgot to go up. I do get what I call bobbling, shaky as if I am going to fall, but have learned to put my arms out as if they were wings and balance myself if I am in an open space or grab for something close by. People always want to take my arms and " help " me walk, and I have to tell them that just makes it more difficult. They can't understand that, but it interferes with my natural corrections. Guest guest
I am no glad that it's getting lighter and lighter at night. I have not even tested driving in the dark with my glasses yet. Actually, I seldom want to be anywhere but home after dark anyway. I wear my glasses on a chain around my neck! I call it middle-age jewelery. But, more often than not, it will be only when I'm driving that I even think of them. The reading glasses are on my nose all the time now. So far, my drivers license has nothing about glasses and it is not due to change for more than 3 yrs yet. Then it's only a renewal. If I'm still here at least. LOL Still don't know why the falls; but, it's been awhile now and so I'll just enjoy it while it lasts. Gloria ________________________________ Gloria, I have a lot of pairs of glasses, one trifocal, progressive after trying with out progressive, the money was worth it. But I too have to have reading glasses to read, books or computer, and also to play the musical keyboard. Too many times I forget to change my glasses for driving, and until recently had to drive then without glasses. Sure don't like not feeling safe driving longer than just around this small town. Guest guest
This is an online thing. I can pick up my glasses at the depot already. Sent from my iPad Holy!!! Is this Zenni an online thing or a chain store?? ________________________________ Have you Checked out Zenni optical? They have a good selection and at very reasonable prices. I just ordered myself a new pair and it cost me 36.00 for progressives. Z Sent from my iPad Gloria, I have a lot of pairs of glasses, one trifocal, progressive after trying with out progressive, the money was worth it. Jan > Jan > > That is a great story about your Dr. But, it sure shouldn't be surprising, hey?? After all, they are human as well. I wear the prescription glasses around my neck; but, usually have the store boughts on because of the computer. > > However, the last time that I fell was not only right done on my nose and forehead on a cement floor; but, I knew then what was happening. I haven't had a fall since and not even a close call. Perhaps that bump on my noggin was what was needed to get the brain doing it's job. > > > I am sorry to see that you suffer with holes in your stomach. Guest guest
There was a program on TV awhile ago about the gouging that optical companies are creating for customers when the actual price of getting glasses is much lower. My husband went to see about glasses and frames for himself and the price on a pair for tri focals was $ 1000.00, that is nuts. He did not buy any. Z Sent from my iPad Those prices and the huge assortment of frames is incredible. My favorite style frames are only $6.95 Forgot to bookmark that one. ________________________________ Yes you still need a Prescription and pupillary distance and pupillary measurement because you have to send them the information. You can try on frames by trying them on the faces they provide or you can upload a picture of yourself without glasses and try them o. Yourself. It is really neAt. Guest guest
For the first time since I was having trouble with double vision, I drove 80 miles to Lake Havasu for dr. appts. A friend went along, and was planning on having her drive, but she was all hot and uncomfortable from coming to my house in her car without working a/c. So, I said i would drive as far as I could, and made it there and back. Since I have a regular prescription for thyroid now, and not just 1 1/2 of the old prescription, it will be a little lower dose, and hope it is enough to hold off the double vision. I was surprised when I realized that my irregular heavy heart beat was not even noticable with the increased dosage. I had been planning on asking for an ablation to stop it as it was so irritating and made it hard to relax and sleep. Might not need that now. So, in the last month, my thyroid has been straightened out, my hemoglobin has gone up after they cauterized the bleeding spots in my stomach, but still quite anemic, my kidney gfr has gone up again to 35 after being as low as 19, 15 is time to put in a port and 10 is the start of dialysis. My blood work shows that my liver is compensated, and managing to do a pretty good job even at stage 4 esld. They are going by the albumin levels in my blood. Medically it has been a good time. This week has been sort of a downer, the 7th would have been my Dad's birthday, the 8th last year was mother's day, last time I talked to my mother even though she couldn't talk, except to say she couldn't talk, She died on the 10th. And mother's day this year is Sunday, won't be too happy a one. Will try to find something to make it a better day. Jan > > > I am no glad that it's getting lighter and lighter at night. LOL > > Still don't know why the falls; but, it's been awhile now and so I'll just enjoy it while it lasts. > Gloria > > > > > ________________________________ > Gloria, I have a lot of pairs of glasses, one trifocal, progressive > > after trying with out progressive, the money was worth it. Guest guest
They have really put the prices down here because of the competition with Mexico. $150 for glasses there, trifocal progressive etc. That includes the exam and glasses. I am going to go to one here as I think I do need a new prescription as this one is about 6 years old. Hopefully my insurance will pay for part of it as I do have cataracts. But will have to pay for the glasses. Getting into Mexico isn't easy for me with the walk over the border from the parking lot, and getting out is worse as there is a long walk in Mexico from the start of the route to the custom's office and then you still have to walk back to the parking lot. > There was a program on TV awhile ago about the gouging that optical companies are creating for customers when the actual price of getting glasses is much lower. My husband went to see about glasses and frames for himself and the price on a pair for tri focals was $ 1000.00, that is nuts. He did not buy any. > Z > > Sent from my iPad > > > > > > Those prices and the huge assortment of frames is incredible. Guest guest
Jan You need a scooter for those trips!! For me, it would seem that walking on and off a ferry when I would be going to Vancouver, would sound financially prudent. Well, thanks heavens that our medical paid the ferries for all the trips. Trying to get from the booth all the way over the walkway and finally to the ferry, was far far too painful. The last time I even had to try, I broke down and asked for a wheel chair. So that was it!! From then on, I drove. Sometimes I feel really weird about having a handicap placard in my car; because I don't look like I have any disability. But, just follow me from the parking lot into Wal-Mart and that's it. Fortunately, I don't need a handicap cart yet and the buggy keeps me up and going. ________________________________  They have really put the prices down here because of the competition with Mexico. $150 for glasses there, trifocal progressive etc. That includes the exam and glasses. Guest guest
I have considered getting a scooter. When I was furniture shopping it was really difficult walking around to the different sections, and if looking for something special, it was always the farthest away. Would also like to be able to see some people where I can't drive up to their apartment, too far to walk. When I had the placard, I forgot to put it up half the time, said I was going to get a bumper sticker which said I really am handicapped and part of it is bad memory. Sometimes I got some bad looks when I forgot. Now I have my own car, in my name, so have it right on the plate. Jan > Jan > > You need a scooter for those trips!! > > > > ________________________________ > > > > > They have really put the prices down here because of the competition > with Mexico. $150 for glasses there, trifocal progressive etc. That > includes the exam and glasses.
