Guest guest
I use a cane almost all of the time, especially when I go out. My husband bought me one from QVC (TV shopping channel)....it is called a Sure Step, and they have a website online under the same name. Anyway - this cane has a flat bottom surface and has a rocking hinge (joint) on it with springs on both sides. SO when I walk the foot walks with me, there is alot less stress on both my wrist and shoulder, plus it is a more natural walking action. You will have to look at it and see, my Dr. Rx'd a four prong monster the was heavy and hard to use, he is now researching the company that I got my cane from for further referral and use. It seems like I am able to do a lot more walking with my " all terrain " cane, I even used it to go on the Handicapped walk to see the Elephant Seals in Santa Cruz, CA. We were actually 15 feet from a Harem of 150 seals- it was too awesome to be able to describe. I do not think I could have done as well in the sand with a regular cane. I know it is pricey - $54.00 but it sure allows me freedodm to go places. If you have any questions, you can contact me personally and I would be glad to talk. It is nice to have no more shoulder pain from the cane, the usual stuff is bad enough. Gentle Hugs & Prayers, Carol M. in CA PS - They have scheduled a date from my husband's surgery - May 24th - they will remove his right kidney and all the lymph nodes leading to it. Please pray for him....we are both very scared, this is why I have not been posting very much.

Guest guest
Cary- Thanks alot. They found the tumor by 'accident' during a ct scan for gastritis. Our insurance is an HMO and it has been extremely difficult to get anything accomplished. Referrals were put off, etc. WE feel better now that the surgery is actually scheduled, but my husband swears the only reason it was in the month of May and not June is because I followed up on every single thing/test/ appointment that happened. We do not have any much family here to help, so the planning is still happening. There is a nurse at our church, and I have asked her to help me with my Enbrel shots, I cannot mix the stuff - my hands are really bad and I either drop it or break it ....... My Sjorgrens has flared and I have a very irritating dry patch on the white of my eye. I see the Dr. tommorrow,,it doesn't feel much better. When I get stressed and cry there are not many tears, but I actually get a black eye from crying and I do not wring my hands into my eyes. Just one of those things. Thanks, Gentle Hugs & Prayers, Carol M. in CA
Guest guest
I use a cane and have for about 2 years. I had the same problem with the wrists and fingers hurting terribly from using the cane (it sounds like your pains are much worse then mine). I spoke with my VA Dr. about it and he suggested I go to Walgreen's or medical supply store and look at the various canes they have. He said the shape of the handle is what is aggravating my wrists and fingers. He suggested I try (right there in the store) different canes with different shaped handles and tell him which shape felt best for me. I did and he ordered me the same cane. It made a world of difference. Now if he could just do something about the extra strain on the shoulders :-) Rick www.whosyomama.com [ ] question about canes etc I know some of you use canes. I had at first tried canes, crutches and a walker- when my feet or knees or hips flare. BUT I soon found out I could not manage any of those becuz of my wrists and shoulders. I also found out soon enough I also could not manage a regular wheelchair for the same reason. DOes this happen to anyone else? I wound up buying my scooter out of pocket with my socil security back pay. - and even with it, sometimes my thumbs cannot work the throttle. My husband tied a larger wider bar onto the throttle so I can work it with the palm of my hand.
Guest guest
Carol, This cane sounds very interesting. Thanks for letting us know. It says it even works on beach sand and my regular cane isn¹t doing a very good job in the sand. I¹ll have to try one. For anyone interested in knowing more about them, this site has several types: http://orthoticmobility.com/surefoot.html I will keep your husband in my prayers. I know it is very scary and the waiting is the hardest part. a > I use a cane almost all of the time, especially when I go out.
