Any ideas? In cancer terms an adjuvant treatment is given after the main treatment to cure the disease based on the statistical possibility that some undetected cancer focus may remain with the intention of destroying it (put cancer and adjuvant into Google) but in your case the adjuvant was given before the treatment with zzz, strictly, this again referring to cancer, would be neo-adjuvant treatment if it was given to improve the chances of success with zzz (by for example reducing tumour size) but perhaps could possibly simply be referred to as adjuvant treatment. As an example of this use of adjuvant prior to a main action, many years ago when producing an animal model of RA I used Freund's adjuvant to potentiate antibody reactions before challenging with an antigen. The context isn't clinical but the adjuvant was given before the event. HTH
Guest guest
Thanks, . This text is very poorly written (in fact, I am sure it's a translation by a non-native). Elsewhere, it does talk about 'neo-adjuvant'. So, the terminology is inconsistent. BTW, why is NEO-adjuvant, and not e.g. PRE-? > Le 15/04/2012 11:24, a écrit : >> A small increase in toxicity was observed in patients who received zzz, >> but all of these patients had received prior www in the adjuvant setting >> - >> I can't see what 'adjuvant setting' means here. It is certainly a pre-treatment but perhaps pre-treatment would include treatment of any sort given before the event whatever its purpose whereas a neoadjuvant always has the purpose of facilitating the main treatment. Guest guest
Many thanks. It's the word 'setting' that was holding me up, not 'adjuvant'. I have decided to construe it as 'adjuvant treatment'. > Good morning, > > The following may help: > > http://www.thefreedictionary.com/adjuvant > > Best regards, > > Augustine LINGUIST > > > > >> ** >> >> >> A small increase in toxicity was observed in patients who received zzz, >> but all of these patients had received prior www in the adjuvant setting >> - >> I can't see what 'adjuvant setting' means here.
