Guest guest
I wanted to check your opinion on this - a nurse on our OB floor demands that we do not send breastfeeding moms any gassy, spicy foods. She is very adamant about it. Is this a standard of care at other facilities? I am going to look and see if there is anything on this in Evidence Analysis Library. I know these foods can be problematic, but should it be crossed off a patients selective menu without evidence it is bothering the newborn? Thanks, Theresa Gilbert, RD, LD 88 MDG, WPAFB, OH Re: Cloned meat Jen, Disturbed is an understatement! This is enough reason (for me) to adopt a vegetarian diet once again! It makes me angry that the government can determine (TWEAK) our food supply and then not allow the individual to make a conscious choice on what he/she decides to eat! Guest guest
Theresa I was a dietitian at a women's hospital for several years and although we did not serve hot wings and pepperoni pizza or Mexican foods with jalapeño peppers, we did serve marinated chicken, fish, broccoli, cauliflower, macaroni and cheese, salad platters etc. The patient had the option of a cold sandwich or fruit platter with cottage cheese if they would like. As a standard of practice, after each delivery a packet of nutrition guidelines was given to each new mom by the nurse. Our numbers were in the packet for any questions and there was a section on gassy foods IF the baby seemed fussy after eating certain foods. We also had food safety, fish safety, a section on nuts and food allergies. As you know, each baby and mom are individual and what affects one child will not affect another the same way. The average length of stay is 2-3 days for most moms and with portion controlled meals, it didn't seem to make or break anything. I did get calls a few weeks to months later with a fussy baby and only in one instance was it the food ( a vegetarian with a large bean and onion intake). I think having a less spicy option (i.e.; turkey sandwich) will satisfy everyone and the OB nurse can go into more detail if she feels it necessary. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I have not seen scientific research but it would seem most babies are fine with the mother's usual diet (think babies in India or other countries that use lots of strong spices). Another thought, it is often recommended that women take Colace (or another stool softener) after giving birth. Colace has sorbitol in it which can cause terrible gas. So compare the two options- eating a high fiber diet or taking a stool softener - both cause gas. Guest guest
Here's written information from three different sources you can show the nurse. The breastmilk flavor changes with the foods consumed. That's a good thing! If the baby has a problem when a certain food is eaten, stop eating it for awhile and try again later. I work for WIC in Texas and it is a struggle to get women to breastfeed. Thanks for not giving in to what that nurse says!
