Guest guest
Welcome Donny, The key is to try to slow the progression of the disease.I do not have recommendations for things which will help, like Milk thistle, or such, I am not a doctor, and have no license to practice medicine. But I have end stage liver disease, and am currently in this same struggle, and have learned through various sources what are things which will make the situation worse. Being overweight. Drinking alcohol, even small amounts. Foods high in fat, and sugar. A balanced diet is a good idea for any one and can keep liver disease from ever starting in the first place. America and Europe are experiencing a virtual pandemic of liver disease, in the US from drinking to excess and obesity, and in Europe from drinking and Paracetamol, (the British name for Tylenol) poisoning. Exposure to chemicals and pesticides. A friend of mine turned yellow after using rubbing alcohol on his chest acne. He had developed alcoholic hepatitis. You see , your skin is your third lung. It can absorb volatile substances like alcohol and gasoline very very easily. Wear disposable nitrile gloves when putting fuel in your car, or changing the oil. Many people are on low protien diets, because we cannot digest too much protein safely. This is not really the best thing for us, and in the long run, can actually harm the liver, which needs protein to repair itself. That being said, the Atkins diet, which is high in protien is in my opinion very hard on the liver. A good way to find out why I say this would be to Google " Oxidative Deamination Reaction " This is a process which converts protein to energy, and the ammonia by-product is converted to Urea ,Nitrogen, and keytones. I did the Atkins diet and purposely lived in a condition called Ketosis for months,(testing positive in urine for keytones) and did lose weight, but I cannot help think that this diet harmed my liver. In my youth I spent 4 years aboard a Navy minesweeper being exposed to bilge gasses and stack gasses as well as Trichloroethelyene and paint. Paint is bad bad bad for the liver. The chemical toluene and tolulol actuallly cause massive necrosis in liver hepatocytes, when a person is exposed to minimal amounts of these, which are found in paint and paint thinner. Tylenol is so toxic to the liver that 50% of the hepatologists in the country feel that it is not safe to take in any amount, ever. (The other 50% vary in their assessment, but conventional wisdom is that it should be avoided if all possible) I did everything wrong. I was 300 lbs, drank 12 beers a day, sprayed pesticides for a living, and ate a high fat diet, and in massive quantities.  I honestly did not know that there would be a breaking point when I reached 45, but there was. My entire life was lived as if I was bulletproof, and I scoffed at people who took care of themselves. There are a good number of those people in the same predicament as I am, but I digress. Good luck, and I hope you can stop the progression of your liver disease before it reaches permanent stage--- Bobby A. ________________________________ To: liver cirrhosis support <livercirrhosissupport > Sent: Wednesday, March 7, 2012 3:50 PM Subject: MILK THISLE  Hello!! Guest guest
Oh, I forgot the number one thing... SMOKING. Many people are still smoking. We never discuss it, but it is there. Smoking can greatly increase the chances of alcoholic hepatitis and NASH ending up as stage 4 fibrosis aka cirrhosis aka ESLD. Guest guest
I'll bet that anyone that suffers a chronic disease wish that they had heeded all that advice we shrugged off. However, we sure can't go back and have a do over, so I hope that I am an example to other people. Don't know if it's the reason; but, my son watches his diet a lot closer (and lectures me) and works out at least 3 times a week. It's very good that he works out because he also works on computers, so that is definitely not hard labor that could keep him in shape. Truly, Iget a little chuckle. For a great deal of his school years, he was really short compared to others. So he would say " Mom, will I ever grow tall? "  I'd tell him he had a 50/50 chance. I have 6'4 " brothers; but, my Dad was only 5'6 " . Well, he's comfortable with his height now - he probably at least 5'8 " or 5'9 " . Then he asked if he would ever gain wait. Now, of course, at that I had to laugh!! Told him that he'd rue the days that he ever asked that when he was around 30!! That has also come true! LOL ________________________________  Welcome Donny, The key is to try to slow the progression of the disease.I do not have recommendations for things which will help, like Milk thistle, or such, I am not a doctor, and have no license to practice medicine.
