Guest guest
Dear Jackie, I have been taking lactulose for persistant encephalopathy  for 6 years. In the beginning, it came as a flavorless syrup, and could either be taken alone or added to juice or water, but around three years ago the company which made a generic form called " Enulose " went out of business. This left only the brand name Lactulose for us to take. Lactulose has a banana flavoring which is so putrid that I routinely get a severe stomach ache when I try to take it. I also have a prescription for the powdered form, called " crystalose " which s much much less offensive. I take either one three times a day in 6 oz. of juice. You should check with the doctor or pharmacist for any inquiry regarding questons about this drug and your husband. Please use caution when using lactulose. It has acquired a rather false reputation as a harmless substance, but can cause some severe complications especially if taken excessively, or outside of a doctors guidance. all prescription drugs should be taken as prescribed. In Japan, and other countries, lactulose is an OTC (over the counter drug) leading to speculation that it is harmless, but I was hospitalized in serious condition with air bubbles in the lining of my large intestine from lactulose. My team at the CU transplant center was completely stumped because there had been no known cases of this condition before. Soon after, a peer reviewed medical article was published about several cases of the condition known as pnumatosis coli. Good luck to you Love, Bobby ________________________________ To: livercirrhosissupport Sent: Sunday, June 17, 2012 10:33 AM Subject: lactulose experience  I am interested in this drug. Guest guest
I also read this morning that you need to cut down on protein. This is what they would do in a hospital.. Too much protein can be the cause of encephalopathy. Z Sent from my iPad Dear Jackie, I have been taking lactulose for persistant encephalopathy for 6 years. Guest guest
In Canada, it's an OTC as well. I'm so glad to see this conversation; because, I didn't know if I was somehow not taking it right. Nothing was happening. Then, it really let go and who would know that any 1 person could be carrying that much crap in the body??  Also, I've been mixing it with a small glass of flavored water and it goes down really easy. Bobby, I agree with you of course; but folks should not take more than the recommended dose of anything. Guest guest
My husband takes lactlose 4 tablespoons 4 times a day 4 days a week and 3 tablespoons 3 times a day to help with high ammonia levels. 3 times a week due to dialysis. Even this much he still gets high ammonia levels. He was in the hospital 3 times less than 2 weeks for ammonia levels. It took 12 hrs before the ammonia levels started to drop and he knew what was going on. Does anyone else care for anyone with ammonia levels getting high and do you keep them at home or go to the hospital. All the Drs can do is give him lactulose but I worry about him going into a coma if I kept him home. levels have been 140, 206 ,225 Sincerely, Bonnie Randklev McCormick Realty 2673 Steamship Drive Bullhead City, Az 86429 Office: 1- Fax: Cell: http://www.northforkatlaughlinranch.com/
Guest guest
Hi Bobby: Interesting comment about the air bubbles in the intestine. About 6 months after my husband's liver transplant we had an appointment to see the kidney dr at the transplant center. While we were in his office I got a call from the liver transplant coordinator telling me to take him to the er because his potassium was elevated. They admitted him to the hospital and gave him 3 doses of a horrible gritty tasting thick liquid called kayexolate to bring his potassium down. It worked like a charm, the same way that lactulose works if you get my drift, and the next morning he was fine. I asked the drs, since we were already there, could he have the scheduled scans he was supposed to have so we wouldn't have to make another trip back next week. They were very accomodating, too accomodating I might add. They took him down for the scan but didn't wait for the kayexolate to get out of his system, came back very puzzled with a team of colorectal surgeons along for the ride, and told us that he had air in his abdominal area which indicated dead colon. They wanted to remove part of his colon and fit him with a colostomy bag. His liver dr had a fit! Then they thought 'well, maybe it's CMV' so they sent him off to the ICU where he spent the night and I camped out in the ICU waiting room. All night long I looked up stuff on the internet and prayed to God that he wouldn't have anything seriously wrong. Another scan was scheduled for 5AM. After the scan came back normal the drs came in looking very puzzled. I told them I had been up all night looking up stuff on the internet and I knew what the problem was. " It's a fart! "  I told them. The one dr burst out laughing and the other one looked at me puzzled and said " but a fart would be inside the colon. This was on the outside. "  " It's a run-away fart! "  I told him, " Now get us out of this cootie factory. This is no place for a person with a compromised immune system! "  We lovingly call it to this day the " Much Ado About Nothing " episode. So how you doing? Did you finish reading my book yet? Have a good day. Love, Jackie ________________________________ To: " livercirrhosissupport " <livercirrhosissupport > Sent: Monday, June 18, 2012 12:43 PM Subject: Re: lactulose experience  Dear Jackie, I have been taking lactulose for persistant encephalopathy  for 6 years. Guest guest
I take 30 mL, 4 times a day. I use a small medical measuring cup (sort of like a smaller shot glass) and thow it down like a couple of shots of whiskey. I used to hate it, then got to the point where i knew i needed it and not whine, and now I just take it and don't really think about it. It saves my life, so no complaints from me! I've been taking it for 2--2.5 years along with Xifaxin, and never have those episodes of shaking, loss of focus and memory, and confusion. It wasn't until I added the Xifaxin that I started to feel normal again. Lactulose serves as a laxative that attacks and removes E. Coli, abyproduct of protein intake, from your intestines. E. Coli stays in your system and creates ammonia, which in turn causes these episodes of confusion and mental fuzziness. occasionally i have to use an OTC laxative to keep the intestines clear. Good luck and God bless Kip kip via iPad

Guest guest
Tommie Have you ever tried drinking alkaline water for your acid reflux? You can make it simply by putting lemon juice in water and drinking it that way. I used to have alot of it but since doing this I have it very seldom now.
