Dear Gloria, sorry for the graffic explanations. Lactulose is probably the only

reason I am still married. This morning, after downing my morning " muck " as we

call it, I handed the empty glass to Sharon, and shuddered, making the bubble

sound with my lips,(BbBbBbbBbBbBbBbBbB) and she said " keep in mind that without

this, I don't recognize you. "

For those  newcomers who might not understand,  with liver disease- poisons

from digesting food often end up in the blood stream from the backed up portal

vein, and cross the blood/brain barrier, which causes a kind of chemical induced

drunkeness. Often it is an angry, boisterous drunkeness. The family of the liver

disease sufferer then begins to suffer as well.

Lactulose to the rescue.

The lactulose works in at least two distinct ways. First off, any speeding up of

the digestive tract is supposed help. Eating high fibre foods can do  this as

well.    The second way  that lactulose helps is that ammonia is converted

by the acidic environment created by the fermentation in the colon.  The

'ammonia' is converted  to 'ammonium'  (with an M) , and is then expelled.

In  India, enemas are a common and ancient way of dealing with liver

disease.Laxatives as well as enemas can become addictive and are not usually

recomended in this day and age, but you are obviously in need of a soloution,

and at this stage, you are the boss, not arbitrary rules. They told us in the

hospice with Ardis that they were discontinuing all of her meds, except for

laculose, because that one was directly linked to her quality of life. I can

really relate now. I have learned that what really works for me is cereal high

in fiber . I snack on it dry, and even

sugary cereal like cheerios and lucky charms are made from whole grain, and

will bulk you up in the guts and work hand in hand with lactulose to keep the

poison from soaking in to your brain. Good luck. Love, Bobby

Bobby - what a colorful picture you painted for us!!  LOL

For whatever misunderstanding, I thought that Lactalose was for constipation and

removing the ammonia.  It sure hasn't worked as a laxative for me.  So, I'm

adding a gentle laxative to help.  Shortly after drinking the Lacta, my belly

begins to blow a bit more and becomes rock hard.  I couldn't force food down at

that point.  Also, it's really hard to time the Lacta around other medications

etc.  I'm going to have to have my calendar send me posts on the monitor to

remind me when I can take it.

However, it has to help get through these short term memory losses.  Some days

I just want to cry, because what I could do in my sleep before, takes me hours

and hours now.  I can't retain a thought for hardly a minute if I'm doing

anything for my work.  Glad that will be over soon.

What a life huh??  Who would have thought that any of us would be talking about

our bowels with each other.  But, it's the only place that I think I'm getting

the straight goods.

Gloria

, there are so many things in life that are trial and error. For

sure, everyone does not react the same way with any drug or treatment,

and I believe that there are more different results within one patient

than between all of them put together. Let me explain... with myself,

there are times I experience constipation with what seems like a gallon

of *lacto-fun*  and extreme gas built up behind it. This is one of my

arguments to the court as to why I can't work. I couldn't expect my

employer to tolerate the  hour and a half bathroom visits that are a

normal part of lactulose therapy. Sometimes it does not work at all,

and then I am in big big trouble, because if it doesn't work at some

point, you become a ticking time bomb, literally, a human volcano, for

real.  I rode the handicapped bus to see my cousin north of here by 20

miles, and began squirming in my seat 10 miles in to the trip, and by

the time I got there, was desperate, and nearly out

of brakes! I ran to my cousins door, and to my horror, he wasn't home,

having stepped out to take his wife to work. I ran to the nearby woods,

and was so so lucky that there were woods nearby for me to find privacy

and that it was so early in the morning.  I now carry the following

items with me in my back pack where ever I go:

*One large trash bag,

*extra underwear,

*baby wipes

*camping toilet paper (it comes in a roll with out the cardboard paper

tube, so that it is compact, and an entire roll of paper is only an

inch  or so thick)

*disinfectant hand wipes or hand sanitizer.

Sorry for the graffic nature of this but it is true and a part of life

now. , I am sorry you had such a bad time. I do understand,

because 1 out of 5 times I take lactulose I get super nauseated. I NO

LONGER EAT ANY FOOD AT ALL ONE HOUR PRIOR TO AND ONE AND A HALF HOURS

AFTER TAKING LACTULOSE. This seems to help a lot. I believe that mixing

solid food with lactulose can cause gastric dumping syndrome, where

food empties from the stomach too soon, and irritates the intestines

causing a horrific belly ache and nausea.

Love, Bobby

I really appreciate your explanations, Bobby.  Even the more colorful ones.

LOL  I have noticed that my memory is a whole lot better when I stay on the

Lactalose.  But, I don't find it difficult to swallow at all.  I stir the

stuff with a little bit of water and I have no problem.  However, because of a

life time problem with constipation, if the laxatives work, then I'm all for

them.  Everything came together the other night and I swear my system is pretty

clean now.  LOL  The only other thing is that I feel bloated for a little

while.  But, that's quickly easing up.

My Mom has always had constipation as well.  However, she just learned a little

over a week ago that she has colon cancer.  We now know where the hereditary

came from, that got my youngest brother.  Mom is 81 and quite concerned about

it all the way around.  The Drs are moving really really fast though.  Our

bigger worry is that she does not do anistegia (? even spellchecker can't figure

this one out).  Anyway, the surgeon is very aware of her allergy and doesn't

think it will be a problem.  For the operation to remove the gall bladder, they

had to fly some special stuff in from Vancouver.

Literally, I remember how ugly my husband got and no one knew that he had lung

cancer.  I know now that lung cancer moves to the brain pretty quick.  A

friend of ours died only 2 weeks after being told that he had 15 small brain

tumors.  Already knew he had lung cancer and was in for several chemo and/or

radiation too.  So, I sure don't want to be in a constant state of fighting my

foggy brain, cause that brings on my irritability or depression.  I'm just so

glad there are people here that are still willing to share their experience,

strength and hopes.
