There was an article in 2007 in Chemical & Engineering News (trade magazine for the American Chemical Society) entitled " Championing Translation " , which described this process of developing therapies from the laboratory to the clinic. A small cabal of technical/medical translators (and former chemists, including me) decided to write a letter to the editor of C & EN to explain that there was an entirely different type of " translation " going on in the field, namely what we do. We also advocated for human translation over machine translation in terms of quality information transfer. They published the letter, and we hope someone noticed. I personally wonder why the term " translation " is used in this therapy development sense at all, since this is really only an example of " development " , as in " research & development " . Maybe " translation " sounds more trendy, and if so, we should take that as a compliment. If anyone is interested in seeing the original article referred to above, I can sent it or upload it to the group area. I have uploaded the file now. The first four pages are the original article, and page 5 is our response.
