Guest guest
The moderators can block the emails of those who do it. Jan > I also get all this spam to. Guest guest
Typically spam is absolute junk but it can also cause your computer to run really slow, sometimes not responding at all. What I see most, as a computer tech, is that someone on someone else's contact list, has the offending spam app on their system. That app then reads all the email addresses in that person's contacts or address book and proceeds to send it's spam emails to everyone on that list. It does this continuously, without the knowledge of the computer owner. What I've been seeing here is a good indicator that someone here has a malware on their system that is sending these bad emails to everyone on their contacts list, which includes the email address for the group. You can't always stop it all, all the time, but you can certainly control it. The best tools I've found to wage my own personal war against this crap are: SpyBot Search and Destroy and Microsoft Security Essentials. SpyBot is a great, FREE antispam ware & antimalware app. You can download it here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html. Save it to a folder on your hard drive. Then install, update & run it. It doesn't run automatically. It does require human intervention. But if you keep it updated & run it monthly, you'll find that your system runs much smoother & much quicker in most cases. Microsoft Security Essentials is also a great, FREE antivirus software. Works very well, running in the background without using a lot of system resources, UNlike Norton or McAfee or Trend Micro. However, it does only work on Windows XP, Windows Vista & Windows 7. As I said, Security Essentials is also a FREE app. You can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5201. You will have to choose either 64bit or 32bit operating system download. If you don't know which you have, you can check by checking your System Info under Start/Accessories/System Tools/System Information. Once you've downloaded & saved MSSE to a folder on your hard drive, update it then run it by choosing Scan Now. If it finds any offending apps, it'll list them and you can choose to quarantine or remove it. I usually choose to Remove it. MSSE will update itself automatically to keep up with all the viruses that come up and will scan your system every week if you want it to. You can choose any update schedule and any scan schedule. You may already have a/v software installed, but if you don't keep it updated & 'PAID' for, it won't do you any good. MSSE is FREE and works great! I used to use other free a/v apps like AVG and AVAST. What I found was that they were becoming resource hogs, using more and more of my system's memory and slowing it down just by being there. It's up to you which software you use, but you must keep it updated and allow it to scan your system at least monthly. I should add here, that you should NEVER have more than one antivirus software installed on your system at any one time. They will fight against each other, creating more problems. You can however, have multiple antispam software installed and used. Another pretty good antispam software is MalwareBytes. They have a free version, but the paid version gives you more options and will run in realtime, which means it will protect your system 'on the fly'. That's about it. I just wanted to give help to anyone that might want it. If you have other questions you can email me directly at dt_consulting2000 at g m a i l. c o m. I'll be happy to help if I can. Guest guest
The only way a mod can block anyone's messages is if that person, or the entire group, are on moderated status. I don't think this group is a moderated group. I could be wrong, but I think our messages come in unmoderated. We are pretty much a self moderated group. But you're right Jan. If we were moderated, the mod(s) could do that. Personally, I think the better part of valor here is to police our own systems & keep them as cleaned up as we can. Remember, not only is the offending system sending junk to this group, it's also sending junk to everyone else in that person's contact list. It just keeps on truckin' through the web. > > I also get all this spam to. Guest guest
I should add, the owner or a mod, can put anyone on moderated status at any time. If they can see who these junkers are coming from, they can moderate their activity or put them on notice that they're going to if that person doesn't clean up their system. At least that way, the junk emails do get caught before they hit the group. But that means that the mods will have to check the pending files several times a day to approve valid messages and deny junk. That also, will slow down the messages getting to the group. I'd rather see everyone take responsibility for their own systems, and get them cleaned up. But you're right, it certainly is an option. > > > I also get all this spam to. Guest guest
We can block them, but I am not even sure that the people know that thier address box has been infected. Guest guest
Bobby I'm so sorry that you've been down. Don't like that. Truthfully, I should take some responsibility and that kind of spam happens, just let the person know what is happening. ________________________________  We can block them, but I am not even sure that the people know that thier address box has been infected. Guest guest
We are definitely not a moderated group. Our owner, is also a liver disease survivor, and has created this group without too many rules, or restrictions. In other support groups, more than half of these messages would never make it o to the site. We are moderators after the fact. One thing I really LOVE about this site is that it has been pretty self policing, and open for discussion. When things get too depressed with our liver issues, we talk about something else for a few days, but I have never even thought about making it an issue. I will try to identify the offending computers by the email address which is sending the spam, and let that person know that they need to scan their computer, and fix it or face being blocked. Guest guest
I agree with Bobby, essentially!! For as long as I've been poking my nose in, I'm not sure that I can remember an incident of spam and certainly not one that brought so many members out to comment. I feel that the group should continue just the way it is. I'm sure that we can all delete the spam when it happens. In fact, that is exactly what I did and then carried on. Also, the poor person who's computer is firing off the spams should be given a heads up. In this incidence, I would suggest that she has already been advised and it's already taken care of. In order to really moderate a group, the moderators will have to spend a lot of time, being prepared for when a post like this comes a long. Doesn't seem it happens often enough to do that.
