Hi

I'm sorry you are experiencing this with your son. I wish there was a way to

know when the time is near and I wish I could help but I too am going through

this with my husband, he just doesn't have jaundice yet. He feels the end is

near and is now on dialysis 3 times a week. My husband has ascites and goes in

for the tummy tap every 4-5 days and they are removing 8-10 liters each time. He

is now having pain in his belly he thinks is from the belly button hernia. My

husband wants to die at home as well but we haven't spoken to anyone about it

yet. I suppose I have to do that soon. 7 months ago the Dr's gave him 6 months

to live without a transplant and we are still having the tests and procedures

done for it. I am afraid he will be too sick to have it done. My husband has not

drank or smoked in over 5 years, he quit before we even knew he had a fatty

liver then it turned into cirrhosis. I will be taking him to the ER today as he

has been sick all night again. My stress level is out of whack and my insides

just shake, its hard to hold down my job and I have no family to help as I am in

Az and family is in Mn. I'll keep you & your son in my prayers along with

everyone who is suffering on this forum.

God Bless

Bonnie

> I have not posted for sometime now but always check in to read the posts. I am

sad to say my Son is sicker now than he was last year. Then they said he had

alcoholic hepatitis, was very jaundiced etc after spending a couple of months in

hospital he came out but never lost the jaundice...he started to drink

again..this resulted in him having a variceal bleed...they have treated it by a

Variceal band ligation....he was due to have a biopsy but discharged himself

from hospital. He is now at home, quite poorly, I am going in to care for him a

couple of times a day. The Dr said he has got cirrhosis they just need to see

how bad it is. He had nose bleeds yesterday and I feel scared as he had those

before his last bleed. He is very thin and sleeping quite a lot...his bilirubin

levels are 100 which is good for him as when he went into hosp last year they

reached 480. He is eating fairly well. He is definitely not drinking now. His

blood is not able to clot very well and when they do the biopsy it will be by

the Transjugular liver biopsy method. What do you all think? can he recover? he

has mental health issues which make him anxious and he cannot handle being with

other people which is what led to him discharging himself. He says he wants to

die at home...he does not want to go into hospital as a patient anymore although

he will go for his biopsy as a day patient. He says life has nothing for him. He

has to have all his teeth removed soon as they are crumbling due to hosp meds

last year..is this common??

> I feel at a loss, can he get better, might he die soon? Sorry I know I have

rambled and everything is disjointed but thank you for reading this and any

thoughts will be appreciated..Kind regards to you all,

I am sorry to see the rough road that may be ahead of you!  You know, I can't

help thinking about your son's age.  Cirrhosis takes a lot of time to come on

and especially to make someone as sick as your son.

Has your son has all the hepatitis tests?  Probably.  But, my son was about

the same age when he suddenly turned so yellow that I couldn't believe that he

wasn't painted.  Immediately, they took blood to test for hepatitis.  However,

because it takes some time to get the results back, the hospital discharged

him.  He wasn't sick and except for the yellow, he was fine.

Well, the first results came back saying that he did not have any of the heps.

I was so happy because I worried a little I might have passed the Hep C during

birth.  So, the internist said - test it again.  That time it came back

positive for mononucleosis!!!  That was certainly a surprise!!  When I

researched the mono, it did say that " in a few rare occasions mono can cause

jaundice " .  Well of course, this boy has never had any of the childhood

diseases.  Nope, his were something than none of the other kids around us ever

had.  Like - scarlatina.  That has replaced scarlet fever.

Is your son set up with a Gastroenterologist??  Why have they said alcoholic

cirrhosis?  It's possible that there is another underlying condition?  I know

a young lady that is about 25 and she was diagnoses with autoimmune liver

disease.  Obviously, they would definitely want to stop the added cirrhosis

from say, Hep C.
