Guest guest
Joanne, I have heard of this. MTX is a folic acid antagonist, meaning that it is a chemical that inhibits a cell¹s capacity to use folic acid. Since taking folic acid can interfere with the effectiveness of mtx, many doctors don¹t prescribe folic acid on the day the mtx is taken. When my liver enzymes were elevated from mtx I took folic acid but I also took milk thistle. Milk Thistle , an herb, has a long history of being a liver protector. SAMe also has been demonstrated to protect the liver from drug-induced damage. I was aware of milk thistle, and asked my rheumy if I could take it along with the MTX. Because she had never heard of it and didn't know what possible interactions there might be, she discouraged me. Did your rheumy have any knowledge of it or opinions about it? Thanks. Guest guest
Sierra, Yes, my rheumy knew I was taking it. My suggestion is to print out articles and bring them to him to read. Ask him to research it and see what he thinks. a > Hi a, > I am about to start taking MTX. I was aware of milk thistle, and > asked my rheumy if I could take it along with the MTX.
