Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis Benefit From Topical Fatty Acid Cream

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) May 04 - In patients with osteoarthritis of the

knees, a topical cream containing cetylated fatty acids relieved pain and

improved functional performance as early as half an hour after

administration.

In the April issue of the Journal of Rheumatology, academic and

pharmaceutical researchers describe a study involving 40 patients with

osteoarthritis of one or both knees who were randomized to treatment with

either a cetylated fatty acid cream or placebo.

In each patient, knee range of motion, timed " up-and-go " from a chair, stair

climbing, medial step-down, and unilateral anterior reach were tested at

baseline, at 30 minutes after the first application of the cream, and after

30 days of twice-daily application.

In treated patients, Dr. J. Kraemer, of the University of

Connecticut in Storrs, and his colleagues observed significant improvements

in the stair-climbing and up-and-go tests at 30 minutes, as well as after 30

days. Supine range of motion and medial step-down tests had also improved

significantly at both these time points in the treated patients.

In evaluations of unilateral anterior reach, the placebo group did have

improvement in the left leg, but the treatment group had improvements in

both legs that were significantly greater than those in the placebo group.

" Topical treatment with cetylated fatty acids significantly [improved]

balance, stair climbing ability, ability to rise from a chair, and walking, "

the authors point out. They add, " A unique finding was an immediate effect

of [the] treatment 30 minutes after initial cream application. "

These findings support the use of cetylated fatty acids as part of pain

relief treatment in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, the

investigators conclude.

The study was partially supported by Imagenetix. Inc., San Diego,

California.

after he's played golf. I think I'd like to try it too!

Judi,

Sorry I¹m so slow responding to this! These creams are available over the

counter

and you can probably find one in a vitamin store. Doing a google search I

found sites selling it,

but I don¹t know anything about these sites. Here is one product by

Nature¹s Sunshine but

I¹m sure there are many brands:
