Guest guest
Hi , Is she taking any medications that might increase her susceptibility to the infections? Antibiotics and steroids are the usual suspects, but birth control is another common one that is often overlooked. Has she been tested for iron deficiency? Her blood should be tested not just for hemoglobin and hematocrit (which will only be low in late stages of iron deficiency), but also for serum ferritin, TIBC, and transferrin. As for diet, yeast feeds on glucose. I don't know if there are any studies to prove this, but I have read that limiting carbohydrates in the diet could help with yeast infections. And of course, yogurt and other products with probiotics should also help. Amer, MS, RD, CDN The Hunger Site needs your help in the fight against hunger! Guest guest
Thanks, . I will ask her about the medications. She did not offer that information directly. As for diet, I was definitely thinking along the lines of low simple carbs and probiotics. What is the link with iron deficiency? Guest guest
I have been working w/ an elderly woman with yeast infection throughout her body...we eliminated ALL fruit and of course, juice/jam/jelly, etc and even milk/yogurt. We held that diet for a few months and eventually incorporated pro-biotic supplements. Gradually, we added back in apples and pears for less sweet fruit options...and plain yogurt. perhaps there needs to be an extensive look and elimination of cerain foods in her diet...food sensitivities can lead to leaky gut and " dysbiosis " or an imbalance in gut flora, leading to overgrowth of Candida... Good luck, Dani N Little, MS, RD, CD --- Sheerin wrote: > Thanks, . I will ask her about the > medications. She did not offer that information > directly. Guest guest
and Dani, does it matter if the carbohydrates consumed are simple or complex, since the carbohydrates in both are broken down to the same monosaccharides at the end? , regarding iron, I'm not sure of the exact biochemistry, but has to do with iron's role in the immune response. Guest guest
, To reduce the Candida via diet, I would recommend eliminating refined and simple sugars (sugar is the main fuel for Candida); milk (high lactose promotes growth, could also be allergen? could also contain trace levels of antibiotics? -oh wait, thats our water supply too! ) and other dairy products and any foods with high content of yeast/mold: cheese, alcohol, dried fruits, peanuts, breads, mushrooms...plus any known/suspected food allergens. Unrefined complex carbs could be consumed in moderate amounts. They can be somewhat mucus and acid-forming, which could contribute to yeast/fungal-thriving environment if in excess...on the other hand, these effects (mucus) could be beneficial. Whole grains ( & sprouts of), for example, are high in lignins which may deter the overgrowth of toxic bacteria. Hope this helps, Dani --- Amer wrote: > and Dani, does it matter if the carbohydrates > consumed are simple or complex, since the > carbohydrates in both are broken down to the same > monosaccharides at the end? > > , regarding iron, I'm not sure of the exact > biochemistry, but has to do with iron's role in the > immune response. > > Amer, MS, RD, CDN > > The Hunger Site needs your help in the fight against > hunger! Guest guest
I recently had a patient diagnosed with chronic yeast infection by his ND. She put him on the most severe diet I had ever heard of. I negotiated with him some whole grains and beans so he would get at least 135 gm of carbs (he was cramping). After making the negotiations and follwoing it for a month he says he feels better and lost 13 lbs (ok so a restricted day can help with wt. loss). He is eating healthier as a result and has more energy.
