Guest guest
>we just don't have the luxury of a 24 week training program and 6 month probation period. I understand completely what you're saying here. Most of the agencies in my area, including my own, have similar feelings... But...... How many people do we lose because they are started on the job before they are ready? They may stay a while, but frustration sets in and other jobs start looking pretty good.... 24 weeks is certainly not to long for training. My agency sends Officers to a 22 week academy, then they ride with training officers for 12 weeks. After 34 weeks, if their training officers recommends, they are put on their own. But it is still understood that they will need much guidance and attention for at least one year... maybe two... My Dispatchers receive 10-12 weeks at the most... they're sat behind the console.. and expected to be perfect on the first day. (by Command) I know better... as and others have said, it takes at least two years for most operators to become truly confident in their work, and to have a level of competence that they are really comfortable with... I recently had a situation where one of the new recruits, with 34 weeks of specialized training.... called radio and ask what to do about a certain report... My 5 week trainee had the answer.... No complaint with the recruit... she had a perfectly valid question. My point is... who did she call? She called radio, they expect much of us, but refuse to give us the personnel, training and resources we need to do the job. My rant for the day...
