Guest guest
Hi everyone, I usually never post anything but I'm always reading posts and replies from other members ever since I joined this group and always found everything so helpful. Today I'm posting because I do not understand the severity of my father's disease at this point and I don't know what's going to happen. I thought with a transplant he would get better but now I'm confused. This is my dad's story in brief: My dad has hemochromatosis within the years he developed cirrhosis ( let me tell you dad never drank) out of his disease. On November 2011( the day before Thanksgiving, I never forget that date) they found 3 tumors in his liver so doctors said his best chance was a liver transplant and he got on the list, while we were waiting he started Chemoembolization and the tumors were shrinking and the levels of AFP decreased a lot. On April 3, 2012 we got a phone call with a possible donor for my dad, so we rushed to the hospital and it was a perfect match and got transplanted. I was really happy and thankful for this event. I really couldn't believe how soon he found a donor. It's been almost 4 1/2 months after the transplant and he's been looking and even feeling better. 3 weeks ago he went for his examinations and after the results were in, they told us that dad has another tumor in his liver, that the cancer came back and that he needed surgery to remove it, that this recurrence is not a good thing. It usually doesn't happen. So he is scheduled for surgery this coming Wednesday to remove the 2cm tumor. The surgeon said that it's more likely that he'll get more tumors in the liver but he won't operate on them and also that he as chances of metastasis in the lungs and bones and that there is no cure. he also mentioned that after surgery he will need to start chemotherapy. I'm just so confused now because he said he's taking the tumor out for a diagnosis only and that if he saw anything else he would not remove. Can anyone explain to me why did the cancer come back? Why so quick? How bad is this? Any insight? Any similar experiences? why transplant if he still has cancer? Guest guest
I am so sorry to hear about your Dad! Sadly though, I understand very well, his situation. Without a transplant though! I was initially told in the fall of 2009 that it was highly likely that I had liver cancer. This while I was still on my 2nd Hep C treatment. Even then we knew that the Hep C was gone; but, left in its wake - cancer due to the cirrhosis. Then in April 2010, the surgeon performed a liver resection. I believe that is what the Dr is suggesting for your Dad. Without a transplant, my cancer came back in 15 months. That was last summer. I too had been feeling wonderful; because, after fighting 8 years for my liver, I finally felt like I had a great deal of health back. However, 15 months after the liver resection, the cancer was back. I was aware back in 2009, what my chances probably were without a transplant. It just came back sooner than I had anticipated. Although the surgeon suggested a procedure called TACE to me, I came home and studied it and decided that I'd had enough of the no quality of life. Now, it was 9 years of fighting and I just could not envision giving up more quality of life, for a little bit of quantity. I had put poison into my system for 48 weeks each treatment and the liver resection. I was flat out done with chemo!! I said thanks; but, no thanks. Instead, I have deeply accepted the path that I am on now and extremely grateful for each and every day. It's been a year now, since that diagnosis and so far, I do not have any signs of being a terminal cancer patient. In fact, I like to ask people if I look terminal. It's my way of including a little humor. Some folks are honestly shocked when I say that. I just see no reason to curl up in my bed and wait to die. Instead, I want to live every day to the fullest and probably selfish at times. I no longer will allow any negativity into this life and over the past 3-1/2 yrs, I've lost a lot of folks that I thought were friends and even family. However, the ones that are still here are the greatest people in the world. Sharing with people on these groups also keeps me together. Each one here or any other group, may have a slight difference of circumstances: but, I believe that we all have a reason to share with each other. Guest guest
Hi I'm very sorry to hear about your Dad. The doctor probably suspects the cancer has mestastisised and that has caused it to spread back to the new liver. But don't give up hope. Look at Gloria who is defying all the odds. There is a chance that once this 2cm tumour is removed he may remain healthy for some time. Also, could they not consider chemo if it has in fact spread elsewhere? I have a friend who's cancer returned about 18 months after a liver transplant. They zapped the tumour (not sure which process they used) and she has remained cancer free so far (12 months). She's currently as healthy as a horse. I would also consider getting a second opinion. There may be a doctor who's prepared to take a more aggressive approach to fighting any subsequent tumours. I feel for your Dad after going through all that a transplant entails to then have the cancer return. Good luck and don't give up hope. Guest guest
Hello ..I'm Hep-d with cirrhosis..Waiting on a liver..my Meld is in range now..as far as Zapping the tumor..I had it done to me..It's called microwave ablation ..my tumor was less than 2 cm. in size..and the location made it a option..sucess!..now I have a cat scan every 2-3 momths..to make sure it doesn't come back..cause if it does...well it will come back I should say..they can still do it again..if it has not spread!.I feel ok most of the time..I tire easy..and I have constant pain in my back area..kinda like a knife being stuck in there..so I have to take meds to control the pain..so I can work. The drawback is.I've become dependent on the oxycodone..I'll have to deal with that when the time comes I guess. no other symptoms for now..except constipation from the meds..so stool softener helps that way..keep your mind and body working together.. ) > > >Hi everyone, > > > >I usually never post anything but I'm always reading posts and replies from other members ever since I joined this group and always found everything so helpful. > >Today I'm posting because I do not understand the severity of my father's disease at this point and I don't know what's going to happen. Guest guest
The procedure that was offered to me is called TACE - biggest word in there is Chemo. However, I am not waiting for a transplant, so when I read up on it, I realized that I was not willing to do that several times in order to get a few months more. As it is at the moment, I've had far more time already than anyone can believe. Since back in 2010, after the surgery, I knew that I did not want any oxy for my minor aches and pains. I wanted to keep that, so that it would work, when the pain was finally hitting from the cancer. I certainly liked it after my resection! The very first thing that I would reach for, is pot whether it's medical or not. I can certainly get it medically whenever I want. Then I was highly disappointed when oxy was pulled here in Canadian, because so many drug addicts could get it. I complained bitterly to my Dr and she assured me that they would just change an ingredient and bring it back until a different name. Then I was happy and stuck to my plan.  LOL ________________________________ Hello ..I'm Hep-d with cirrhosis..Waiting on a liver..my Meld is in range now..as far as Zapping the tumor..I had it done to me..It's called microwave ablation ..my tumor was less than 2 cm. in size..and the location made it a option..sucess!..now I have a cat scan every 2-3 momths..to make sure it doesn't come back..cause if it does...well it will come back I should say..they can still do it again..if it has not spread!.I feel ok most of the time..I tire easy..and I have constant pain in my back area..kinda like a knife being stuck in there..so I have to take meds to control the pain..so I can work.
