Guest guest
Hi ...the surgery I had is not the same surgery as Carnie or Al Roker had. They had a " gastric bypass " also called a Roux-En-Y or Fobi. That surgery changes the stomach to a 1 - 2 ounce " pouch " , eliminates the pyloric valve, and causes food to go almost completely undigested from the pouch to the intestines. This is the surgery that can have the " dumping syndrome " where one has the sweats, shakes, nausea and/or diareaha and weakness from undigested carbs hitting the intestines. This one is the most common bariatric surgery done in the USA today. It is technically a somewhat easier surgery to perform than the one I had. The surgery I had is called a " Duodenal Switch " or BPD/DS. The stomach is reduced in size but in a way that does not interfere with the pyloric valve or other digestive processes. I have a higher degree of malabsorption than the " gastric bypass. " This requires me to be diligent in regard to certain vitamin & mineral supplements. Both can be good surgeries for certain people. I've got friends who've been successful with each of them. For me, I chose the " Duodenal Switch " bcause I stil have a fully functioning, though smaller, stomach, I can eat most anything, there is no " dumping " syndrome and the stats for people as heavy as I was are better both for weight loss and long term success with the DS. Yikes, I sound like a weight loss surgery spokesman! It's just been so prevelant in my life lately. You are a sweetie to think of me! Yesterday I had my first bites of crisp, green salad since my surgery. Wow, was that good! I still hope you & I can get together for lunch sometime when you're " out West " ! Much love & many hugs..... Tess
