He's a huge disseminator of incorrect information on the ob/gyn.net forum board--along with many other ob/gyns on that board. If others wish to write to him, be prepared for deep wrath.....they're a little sensitive about the issue of UAE....oh, you should also be prepared to be accused of being me.....apparently they think no other woman has an interest in UAE or can speak intelligently about it....my posts over there on the topic of UAE etc. have all been deleted and I've been banned from posting to their forum. In addition, the editor of ob/gyn.net forum recently banned the topic of UAE from further discussion on the board. Guest guest
Thanks for your response Marsha. I'll try to answer some of your questions. I've been to several gynecologists. There are two I've narrowed it down to if I decide to take surgical action. One of them mentioned UAE to me, which is one of the reasons I feel a certain amount of trust with him. Most doctors around here don't mention it. The other gyn didn't bring it up, but when I mentioned it, she said it was certainly an option if I didn't want children. These are the two most enlightened doctors I've found in the area. Both said I could keep waiting. One of them said women have carried full-term pregnancy size tumors without problems. The one I'm primarily going to said I should do it prior to 20-week size though because he said the bigger bulk just made the surgery more difficult. I have never had children, and they have never been in the plans, but I guess I wasn't completely ready to close that option forever. I have considered UAE, especially since reading all the positive posts about it, but there are a few reasons why I'm hesitant: 1. Not being 100% certain I won't want children. 2. I spoke to the HERS Foundation about fibroids and they are very adamant about it being dangerous (deaths from infection), experimental, and even said the particles that are injected contain carcinogenic material. Their response frightened me. Anyone have any response on why they would do this? 3. Only two local IRs do it. I spoke to one on the phone and he said he wouldn't recommend it unless I was very symptomatic. So, even he made it seem sort of like an emergency last-ditch effort. He said the long-term affects were unknown. 4. I know it's rare, but I have a slight fear of early menopause too. I know many of you have had it performed, with success, but all of this still frightens me, especially since I'm young. If there are long-term affects of some sort, I'll have to live with them a long time. Back to your questions: I had an ultrasound in Dec. of 99. The fibroid measured 7.4cm X 10.9cm x 10.5 cm. Since then, I have had two pelvic exams. I'm small, so the gyn. says he can get a pretty good idea of the size from a pelvic. In the last three months, he didn't think there had been any growth. I guess I thought that if I had a myomectomy and I end up having continued problems with fibroids, I'd consider UAE then. Sorry this is so lengthy. Thanks for any feedback from the group. Asymptomatic uterine fibroids Hi , I have been one to advocate for medical therapy for rapidly growing benign symptomatic uterinefibroids in the past, using UAE, unless there is a pregnancy desired. If I may please ask? Are you desiring a or another pregnancy? Your 16 week size was measured by pelvic exam, ultrasound, MRI? Your gynecologist is recommending watchful waiting and is not concerned about your growing asymptomatic fibroid? I have some real concerns about Gynecologists and this " watchful waiting " game. What are we doing, " watchfully waiting " these growing asymptomatic/or symptomatic fibroids until they are no longer manageable except via hysterectomy? The burden is on the Gynecologists to disprove me, via studies, statistics, that this is not the case. They need to show me also, that endocrine disruptors (xenoestrogens) from the millions of tons of chemicals released in air/soil/water are not impacting us. I can't believe how many younger women are coming aboard now---- there is tremendous need for research, this watchful waiting is outdated and obsolete in my opinion. If the uterine fibroids are growing in a woman in her 30's--how is she going to make it to menopause (age 45+)? In the meantime, here is a discussion on uterine fibroids by Dr. Hill, editorial advisor to OBGYNET. A little more enlightened, but once again, no mention of UAE---would anyone care to write to Dr. Hill? http://www.obgyn.net/women/articles/fibroids_dah.htm Click here: OBGYN.net Publications - Uterine Fibroids - D. Hill, MD Hope you'll continue the discussion . There may be many women also presenting with asymptomatic uterinefibroids that could provide additional insight or benefit from. Take good care of yourself.
