(Address: Centro da Obesidade Mórbida, Hospital São Lucas da PUCRS, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil). Summary: In a study involving 210 patients who had recently undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP), inadequate intakes of various micronutrients were found in the post-operative period through 2 years post surgery. 24-hour eating records for the patients were collected 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months post-operation. Inadequate intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, and B-complex vitamins (with the exception of cyanocobalamin and riboflavin) were found. Over the course of the 2 year study period, an increase in consumption of nutrients was found; however, the intakes were not consistent. The authors conclude that in patients who have undergone gastric bypass, " …the routine use of multivitamins is deemed necessary after the first month postoperatively, with its maintenance preferably for the rest of the patient's life, without abandoning periodic clinical and laboratory follow-up.
