Guest guest
Hi, We limit whole grain products as they tend to be higher in both potassium and phosphorus. You can get around small amounts of potassium on short-term easier (in my opinion) than additions of phosphorus in the diet. For a 100 gm serving, here are how the USDA breaks down various wheat breads with phosphorus content: " wheat " .....155 mg phosphorus " white (both enriched and unenriched) " ....97 mg phosphorus " wheat bran " ...185 mg phosphorus A slice of bread is usually somewhere in the 20-25 mg range, so you are talking about the difference in phosphorus per day equivalent to what 1-3 more phosphate binders would be required to flush out. Dark colas routinely provide 55 mg phosphorus per 12 ounces. I tell my patients that any place they can eliminate excessive phosphorus and maintain some semblance of variety in their diet---do it! I had 2 patients die on Valentine's Day who had been on dialysis between 6 and 9 years. Both spent about a year in intense and excruciating pain from the devastation caused by Calcific uremic arteriolopathy (calciphylaxis). I see lots of references that call this long-term complication of renal failure " rare " . I have seen quite a number of cases at my clinic and wouldn't wish the disease on the most horrendous evil human who ever existed.
