Guest guest
Dear Irina, Let me start by saying that recovery after a hysterectomy is different for every woman. Why are you having the hysterectomy? What has your doctor told you about recovery? I had a hysterectomy 20 months ago because of uterine fibroids, and possible adenomyosis (later I learned there was no adenomyosis, just fibroids). I don't mean to scare you, but I want to be honest. I would not have this surgery again. There are other ways to successfully treat fibroids. For me, hysterectomy just exchanged one set of problems for another. The only good thing hysterectomy did was to stop the bleeding. Now I am dealing with hormone problems (I have my ovaries), pain in my hip joints, groin, bladder, back, sexual dysfunction, insomnia, depression. Have you looked into myomectomy or uterine artery embolization? These are alternative treatments for fibroids. If you are going to follow through with hysterectomy, be 100% sure that this is what you want, because it can't be reversed if you are not happy with the outcome. Maybe some of the other women on this forum who have had myomectomy or UFE could help Irina? I've heard of the other optional treatments for uterine fibroids. But, myomectomy is not adequate for me, as the fiborids are " embedded " in the uterus wall and the uterus itself is enlarged (like 20 weeks pregenant, as confirmed by the ecography). UAE is not usual in my country. Moreover, I experience already the kind of problems you say you have after the hysterectomy - fatigue, insomina, anxiety, huge belly, always " full " (maybe you don't have this symptom anymore), permanent fatigue etc. For the last two years, my periods have been awfully difficult - heavy bleeding with enormous clots, lasting for more than 8 days or for a whole month... I don't want to have this surgery, which seems mutilating, but I don't want, also, to have such bleedings anymore. It's awful. I want to be a normal woman, an active one, as I used to be, with lust of life and optimism. I hope maybe this surgery is a chance, for I don't want to be, for the rest of my life, an " infirm " with a protuding belly and all kinds of digestive disfunctions or pains in different parts of mai abdomen. Of course, i fear the recovery period, i don't know when i'll be able to resume my usual activities, because, like so many women perhaps i feel i am a " superwoman " ,if you know what I mean, a person indispensable to the family and all the others... I don't want to be a burden for my family. My gyn said that for at least one year after the hysterectomy he would provide me with an " implant " (Riesel, if i've got it right) meant to take care of this surgical menopause. I'll be around untill next week, then, maybe tuesday, i'll have the hysterectomy, provindig my bloods tests and urinalysis are OK. Waiting for your answer, i am eager to chat. Best regards, Irina ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup
Guest guest
I am scheduled to have a hysteroscopic resection and endometrial ablation (I cancelled a laparoscopic myomectomy earlier in the month) on July 11. Before the surgery, I took Lupron to help shrink my existing fibroids (it worked!) but I have the same set of complaints that are outlined below: hip joint pain, groin/abdominal pain, sexual dysfunction, etc. and urinary incontinence (traded one type of pad for another). I have come to the conclusion that, despite being an informed and proactive patient, doctors seem to decide what is best for fibroid treatment anyway. I am currently unhappy with all the choices available. Sure, there are women who have had " success " with every method out there but I am not confident that enough is done in the very beginning to prevent the fibroids and the bleeding abnormalities they cause. Seems like an awful lot of us end up making a tough decision later in life because we agreed with our gyn's " wait and watch " approach. Guest guest
Really couldn't afford to be away from work for the recommended recovery time. Also, I wanted something less invasive (hysterectomy was the first choice I was offered). I mean, they had already done an exploratory lap and hysteroscopy so I wasn't thrilled about the idea of having yet another cut (I don't heal well). Just wimped out basically. > > <html><body> > <tt> > Why did you cancel the myoectomy???<BR> > </tt> > > <!-- |**|begin egp html banner|**| --> > > > <hr> > <!-- |@|begin eGroups banner|@| runid: 6021 crid: 3140 --> > <a target= " _blank " href= " http://click./1/6021/9/_/4009/_/962741747/ " ><center> > <img width= " 468 " height= " 60 " > border= " 0 " > alt= " " > src= " http://adimg./img/6021/9/_/4009/_/962741747/468x60applbox0intro.\ gif " ></center><center><font color= " black " ></font></center></a> > <!-- |@|end eGroups banner|@| --> > <hr> > > <!-- |**|end egp html banner|**| --> > > > </body></html> _______________________________________________________________________ $1 million in prizes! 20 daily instant winners. Guest guest
Irina, I don't know whether it is too late for you to talk some more with your doctor about hysterectomy. Still I hope the following suggestions may be of some use. They are based on reading, not from personal experience. 1) You mention getting hormonal implants. But is it necessary for you to have your ovaries removed. Both ovaries? If you can keep your ovaries, or even one ovary, you will probably NOT go into menopause immediately and when it happens it will be more gradual with less severe symptoms. It can be hard to adjust HRT dosages to suit the individual woman. 2) Unless you have problems with your cervix, it should be possible to have a sub-total (also called supracervical) hysterectomy. My understanding is that this is an easier operation with less incidence of post-operative bladder, urinary and sexual problems than for total hysterectomy. In fact, I cannot understand why it is not the norm everywhere. But apparently not all surgeons have enough training and experience in sub-total hysterectomy. I personally am doing all I can to avoid hysterectomy (alas, I may not succeed). But I do know women who have recovered very well from their operations and in the long run feel better after they have had the operation than they did before. I wish you had more options, but I send you best wishes for good results from your treatment.
