Guest guest
Sue, I had lapband weight loss surgery. Adjustible gastric banding. I have a band around the upper part of my stomach and a port under my skin below my ribs which my doc can add or remove saline to make the band tighter or looser. Thereby adjusting the amount of food I can eat and how long it sits in my pouch. This is a very different procedure from gastric bypass (RNY, duodenal switch, Fobi pouch). There is no cutting or changing of instestines or digestion in anyway. This is strickly a volume limiting procedure. There is no bypassing or limiting absorption of food found in traditional gastric bypass procedures. There is also no problem with super smelly waste from undigested food sitting in bowels and generally no dumping syndrome. I am the rare one that does have dumping syndrome from high fat or high sugar foods. I had this before I had surgery. I chose this procedure because I am on MTX and I have had a problems with B-vit malabsorption as well as anemia. I felt if I went with traditional gastric bypass which would make it worst and I would be stuck with the end results. I am very happy with my lapband. I like the fact that with the help of my doc I can control the rate at which I loose weight. I am hoping that will eliminate the hanging, sick looking skin that most gastric bypass patients get from loosing most of there weight in the first 6 months. I have accepted the fact that it will probably take me one year to loose the 125 lbs that I need to loose and I will have to work for it. That is OK for me...it will be more rewarding that way!!! Though so far I have lost 21 lbs in 3 weeks....so it may not take a year like I have planned! There are a few of use Surgical weight loss patients on this group. I believe we have all had different procedures and are at different stages in our journey. Tess if you are out there you can explain the pros and cons of your procedure that you had.
