Guest guest
Dear Carol, It is very scary to me, and I have another week to think about it. Guest guest
So sorry you have to wait another week Tawny. It just isn¹t fair. If you have a lump that they are doing a biopsy on and they are doing an ultrasound, why are they doing a mammogram too? I only ask because I have read that the squeezing of a mammogram could rupture the lump. a > Hi everyone, I'm back from the clinic, and I got a breast exam, and > an appointment for next Monday, for a mammogram, ultrasound, and > biopsy. Guest guest
Tawny, how much longer are they going to keep you in suspense before giving you that mammogram? I know how much something like that can worry you because I've been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Try to hang in there another week, and I hope you get good news then. Guest guest
Sweetie - let us know the results as soon as you know. Guest guest
Tawny I'm so very glad you were finally seen at the clinic! I know what you are going through right now is very scary...I've been there myself. But you can't fix a problem till you know what it is...so at least you are on the path to figuring out the problem. I'm thinking of you. Cary

Guest guest
Tawny- I found a lump a few years ago. I was terrified because I had already had cervical cancer in situ (not spread). So I opted for a lumpectomy. I got some yummy sleepy meds, went to sleep, woke back up and went home! I asked the surgeon to let me see the lump she took out, but she just looked at me like I was nuts and said she couldn't. Then I had to wait on the pathology. Of course, I couldn't even think straight. I think it took a week or so. I was very lucky, as it was benign. I had a little pain and a small scar. The lump felt like a hard pea, I actually found it while reading the paper! No idea how, to be honest. The scar was about 1/2 to 3/4 " long-I called it my frankenboob after that! It's pretty much faded away now. I also have a friend who has tons of lumps...all of a sudden I can't remember the name for it. It gets much worse if she drinks caffeine. Anyways, I know the waiting is awfully hard-but think of all the research you'll get done! A very good book to get from the library or buy is Dr Love's Breast Book. It is excellent and walks you through all of this stuff in normal people's language. I'll be thinking of you. Cary

Guest guest
Tawny, I've had mammograms, an ultrasound, and a couple of needle biopsies. An ultrasound is supposed to be able to detect more than a mammogram, I think. For the biopsy, I lay face down on a table that had a hole in it for the breast to stick through. Then they jacked up the table and worked on me from underneath. I felt like a car being jacked up to be worked on, LOL. Anyway, they gave me a shot in the breast to deaden it. That was the only thing that hurt, but it just hurt a little. Then a needle was inserted into the breast. They used some kind of computer imaging, I think, to show where to insert the needle. A small bit of tissue was extracted by the needle. This tissue was examined to see if it was benign or cancerous. I have had two needle biopsies, both times not because of a lump, but because of microcalcifications that showed up on mammograms. The first time, they were benign; the second time, they were cancerous. But thankfully the cancer was caught very early. I had a lumpectomy, followed by 35 radiation treatments. If I had chosen a mastectomy, I wouldn't have had to have the radiation treatments. It's the waiting around that's so hard, wondering what they're going to find. I think it's natural to think that it's cancer because we tend to picture the worst scenario. But a lot of lumps turn out to be benign, so try not to worry too much yet. Even if it is cancer, breast cancer is extremely treatable. All of us here will be pulling for you and keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. If you want to ask me any more questions, feel free to do so. I just wish they wouldn't keep you waiting forever and dragging everything out so long. Guest guest
I was under the impression that mammography was to detect lumps. Once detected, they use ultrasound to distinguish between a cyst or a solid mass. I¹m not to sure about the procedures either, so instead of guessing, I¹ll see what I can find for you so that you know what to expect. I know it is so stressful waiting for all of this to get over with. a > Hi a, I'm not really sure what the procedures are. I was told > they will do a mammogram first, and then the ultrasound after. Guest guest
That is what they told me. They kept checking the chest area, and not just the breast. Guest guest
Tawny, I had ultrasound and a breast biopsy about 5 years ago. My mammogram showed a small spot, so they ultrasounded it to determine if it was liquid , like a cyst, or a mass. It wasn't liquid so they went on to the biopsy. They mamogrammed me several times, leaving my poor boob in the vise the whole time. Then the radiologist inserted a long needle into the spot. They left the needle in, and took me to surgery. They gave me Versid, which kind of puts you out, at least I can't remember any of it. The surgeon cut to the needle and removed the little spot. Luckily it was benign. It took a few weeks to heal, and I still have about a 2 inch scar, but like I told the surgeon, I wasn't planning on modeling for Playboy anyway. It really wasn't that traumatic, and it was good to know it was benign. Noreen

Guest guest
Cary, Fibrocystic breasts is the name that slipped your tongue. I¹ve had fibrocystic breasts most of my adult life, but it went away when I went through menopause. Coffee would make mine worse too, and although I had very little abdominal cramping before getting my period, my beasts would be very tender. I always knew when my period was coming by my breasts. Part of the reason that I¹ve searched for alternatives to mammography is because it was so very painful for me to get a mammogram and also it is so hard to distinguish lumps. I found a woman here that specializes in breast thermography so I¹ll be checking into it. I¹m so glad your lump was benign. Guest guest
Tawny, This is the usual procedure. If seen by a doctor and it is determined that there is a lump by palpation a doctor can order a mammogram with an ultrasound to follow if necessary. This way the allow a time to do the mammo and time to do the ultrasound immediatley after the mammo. Then both can be out of the way. If anything suspicious shows on mammo/ultrasound then a biopsy can be set up. Some biopsies are done surgically but most now a days are done in the radiology dept under the guidance of ultrasound called a sterotactic core guided biopsy. This is how things are done at our hospital in town. As an office nurse I set up many of these. Hope this helps.
