Guest guest
Please let me know what time I should be there, June! I'll tell you where to go! Mayo Clinic in Rochester http://www.mayoclinic.org/rochester s Hopkins Medicine http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org [ ] Draft > Thanks Kathe, your kind words are appreciated, along with the others. I will be happy to send you a copy as soon as I get time to get things sorted out. My boys and grandsons will be here for the weekend to build a new fence and new deck out back, then next weekend is my baby boy's birthday surprise party (he turns 50 LOL). Needless to say, I am getting all their favourite foods ready. Feeding my 6 men is like feeding an army. Just as a matter of interest, I have made pulled pork, pulled beef, chili. 6 dz. different sized rolls, an orange cake, chocolate chip cookies and rice pudding, picked up a pile of peameal bacon for their breakfast. I will be smiling ear to ear, having them all here at the same time brings me more joy then I can put into words. Of course, all their special hugs and kisses for Grandma just puts icing on the cake. > > Hugs > June

Guest guest
Things change when there is an active conflict. Any entity that doesn't reevaluate its situation and make adjustments as necessary will be doomed to failure. While I sympathize with those who have a short time left and would like to make the transition to civilian life, Army enlistment contracts carry an 8 year obligation, even if a soldier signs for only 3-4 years of active duty. It shouldn't come as a surprise. When you sign a contract and then you are asked to abide by it, there should be no questioning it, even if it sucks. Karla Re: Draft While there is no compulsory draft - look what is being done to the people already enlisted - Becky By TOM ROEDER - THE GAZETTE Soldiers in Fort Carson's 3rd Brigade Combat Team have until the end of the month to decide whether they're staying with the unit until 2007 or heading elsewhere. Some would have to re-enlist to make that commitment. Anyone who doesn't agree to stay will be transferred — perhaps to a unit headed back to Iraq. Leaders say forcing the issue will keep the 4,000 soldiers and their families together longer and will pay dividends on the battlefield. The three-year commitment is part of a larger plan that the Army says will assign soldiers to the same post for significant portions of their careers, saving taxpayers millions of dollars in moving money and allowing migratory GIs to put down roots in communities. The brigade, which is undergoing a substantial reorganization, will keep the same soldiers from October 2004 until October 2007. Those who don't sign up to stay in the brigade for the three years will be released to fill " the needs of the Army, " said Lt. Col. , a Fort Carson spokesman. One sergeant in the brigade's artillery battalion said he and others are being told their options are re-enlisting in the brigade or heading out for war with other units. He requested anonymity. " They told us, `You're going to the needs of the Army if you don't sign up to stay in.' And the needs of the Army are in Iraq, " said the sergeant, who plans to leave the Army next year to attend college. The brigade returned in April from a yearlong deployment to Iraq and isn't scheduled to go back, unlike other Fort Carson units that are preparing to send 7,000 soldiers back to the fighting. The sergeant said he's in a tough spot, because he doesn't want to spend another three years in the Army. " I've been to Iraq, and I don't want to go back, " he said. said leaving the brigade doesn't bring a guarantee of Iraq duty, but it does open the possibility. He said each soldier who chooses to leave will be evaluated and reassigned. Some with less than a year left in their service commitments will remain at Fort Carson, but not necessarily all, said. The sergeant fears being sent to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, also at Fort Carson. The regiment is scheduled to leave for Iraq in March, months before he's supposed to leave the Army. The regiment will fall under the Pentagon's " stop loss " order early next year. That order keeps soldiers in uniform for a year in Iraq, no matter when they were scheduled to leave service. About 1,800 soldiers in the post's 43rd Area Support Group are already under the order, because that unit will start heading for Iraq in October. Lt. Col. Withington, spokesman for the Fort Hood, Texas- based 4th Infantry Division, which includes the Carson brigade, said the Army isn't using the three-year-commitment to send soldiers to Iraq with other units. He said the soldiers who leave the brigade will be dispersed throughout the Army and may wind up in a unit that's headed for Iraq. That's just a symptom of an Army that's trying to change how it does business in the middle of a conflict, he added. The plan to keep soldiers in the 3rd Brigade for three years is only about making that unit more cohesive, Withington said. " This is not business as usual, and soldiers will have to determine what their plans for the future are, " he said. " The division understands we're dealing with people and families here.
