Acetyl-L-Carnitine May Benefit Children with Inattentive-type ADHD

Reference: " Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity

Disorder: A Multi-Site, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Trial. " Arnold LE,

Amato A, et al, J Child Adolesc Psychopharmacol, 2007; 17(6): 791-802.

(Address: L. Eugene Arnold, M.D., M.Ed., Ohio State University, The

Nisonger Center, Mc Hall, 1581 Dodd Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43210,

USA).

Summary: In a multi-site, 16-week, pilot study involving 112 children

(83 boys, 29 girls) between the ages of 5 and 12 years, diagnosed with

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), treatment with

acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC) was found to be superior to placebo in treating

children with a specific subtype of ADHD - inattentive-type ADHD. Dosage

of ALC was determined based on the child's weight, with doses ranging

from 500 to 1500 mg, twice a day. While no overall improvement in

symptoms of ADHD was found in the primary intent-to-treat analysis,

secondary analyses found significant improvement in symptoms of ADHD in

children with " inattentive type " ADHD after taking ALC, while the

opposite tendency was found in children with " combined type " ADHD. The

authors conclude that treatment with acetyl-l-carnitine in children with

ADHD " deserves further exploration for possible benefit specifically in

the inattentive type. "
