Guest guest
Dear Cindi, I have the same problem you do about weight. Plus both Neurontin and Prednisone have side affects listed as " weight gain " !!!!!I also take Enbrel that has the same affect. Kind of getting slapped with the Chubby wand???I have started to eat more meals per day. i.e. a piece of cheese.....a cup of yogurt......Apple and peanut butter. But it seems that the more I eat, small meals that I do lose weight. I have lost approximately 1/2 pound per day this week. Doesn't sound like much, but it seems to work. Maybe we can all help each other, I know extra weight makes our disease much worse. Take Care, Carol M. in CA
Guest guest
Hi : My name is and I have similar problems too. If you are looking for a buddy to loose weight with I could sure use one. I weight about 210 lb. and have been on prednisone a long time and can't get off of it. I need to loose weight because I have a breathing problem - atelectasis - and it would help that if I could take some weight off. If you are interested, let me know. Sincerely, Colletti Anjillah@... Guest guest
Hi Cindi, Carol, and - I have been on an Healthy Eating Plan, since November 2003, so am really pleased at my weight loss. I call it an Healthy Eating Plan, because personally I have to accept, that although some of my weight gain is due to my illnesses, I am an emotional eater to. At times, I have certainly ate more than was good for me:( My meds are totally different than yours Cindi, so most probably it was easier for me to lose weight. Also, I am Thyroxine, which could have helped my weight loss. It would be fabulous, if you guys could somehow join up, to encourage each other in everyones attempts to lose weight, plus me if possible. These are the types of meals which helped me, I hope they will help others - Breakfast Either: 2 pieces of wholemeal toast, with a tin of plum tomatoes, piece of fruit Apple, Orange, and 3 plums 2 ozs of Allbran, piece of fruit Lunch is normally a sandwich made with Rye bread and with a small side salad, and a piece of fruit. Fillings: Low cal triangle cheese spread Thin slice of Turkey Thin slice of Ham Prawns - just a small handful on a layer of lettuce Dinner: Medium Jacket Potato with a filling - can be low cal cheese, prawns, home made coleslaw. Microwaveable low cal ready meal, such as lasagne, fish pie French Bread Pizza (Findus) I buy the ready prepared bags of salad, with Rocket, Spinach etc in. A good buy is also the bags of ready prepared veggies for chinese meals. These include bamboo shoots, green cabbage, carrots, red peppers, onions etc. I eat all these raw, including white cabbage, mushrooms and brocolli. The homemade coleslaw is made up of white cabbage, grated carrots, a little red onion, and I also add fresh apple, or pear if I wish:) The dressings are low cal/low fat dressings, bought from the Supermarket, with cider vinegar added. Sunday, for breakfast I might have a wholemeal toasted sandwich with 2 thin grilled pieces of bacon, topped with Tomato Ketchup. Normally for dinner I have oven baked chicken with loads of cooked veg such as cabbage, carrots and brussel sprouts (boiled or steamed). I do not weigh anything, the fruits are all of medium size, also the Jacket potatoes. If I know I have eaten something which is larger, then the following day, I cut back slightly. Next weekend I am going to a Cat Show, and will have a few beers LOL and maybe a bag of American Winegums on my return home. I do have the odd treat, but they are well spaced out. The last time I did this, was about a month ago, and before that 3 months. I do not go walking, but I try to do 30 mins of gentle stretching exercises on my bed. Am unable to do any with my left arm at present, because of damaging it, just recently! All the best to you all in your attempts to slim down:) Carole ^^~~^^~~^^~~ > heinscsf@y... Guest guest
Cindi, I would start with 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. The key is small meals every 4 hrs or so. going long periods of time with no food tells the body its being starved so it refuses to let go of the weight. Measure out you meals. I eat 2-4 ozs a meal..my average meal is 3 ozs. I eat protein at EVERY meal. You need protein to loose fat and keep muscle. Protein also takes longer to digest that fat or carbohydrates. So a typical meal for me is protein, veggies and carbs if there is room(typically there is NO room) Drink at least 64 ozs of water every day. I usually drink around 100 plus ozs( I live in Texas where its hot) NO cafferine, if I do drink tea with cafferine for every oz of tea I have need to drink an additional oz of water. I stay away from high sugar, high fat foods. Make every thing count that I eat. I do not use sugar. I sweeten things with splenda. I do NOT graze. Once I am finished eating I get up and leave the table. No seconds!! I do not drink while I am eating or drink for at least 30 mins after eating. I also take at least 30 mins to eat a meat chewing everything at least 20 times. I do some form of aerobic exercise for at least 15-30 mins a day trying to increase the time every day. I do not not access to a pool either. I walk, use elliptical , or gazelle cross trainer. toni In a message dated 6/25/2004 10:05:38 PM Central Daylight Time, writes: Date: Fri, 25 Jun 2004 17:09:27 -0000 From: " CINDI " <heinscsf@...> Subject: CAROLE/ PLEASE HELP ME DEAR CAROLE, HI MY NAME IS CINDI HEIN, I ALSO NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT, I WEIGH RIGHT NOW WHAT YOU DID AND AM THE SAME HEIGHT. Guest guest
Hi , Yes, sounds great. I think we could form our own little support group when it comes to weight. I know how hard it is when you are on prednisone. I was one of the lucky ones who was able to taper off when I went on Enbrel and only use it for flares. I am stuck in a rut right now and could sure use a buddy. Sometimes it seems easy and sometimes it seems like climbing a mountain. Talk to you soon. Guest guest
Hi Carole, I surely identify with the emotional eating. It is the hardest part for me. In my pre-RA life I was very active and it helped keep my weight off. After RA hit, I started turning to food when i was upset or bored and that coupled with the prednisone was a recipe for disaster-no pun intended. I am trying despartely to get the emotional thing under control and have lost 50 lbs. in two years - it is slow but i don't beat myself up anymore when i slip up I just try again the very next day. Your diet sounds very healthy Carole and very much what I have been doing myself - a little Weight Watchers and a little common sense. Talk to you soon. carolegwyther <gwythermystq@...> wrote: Hi Cindi, Carol, and - I have been on an Healthy Eating Plan, since November 2003, so am really pleased at my weight loss.
