Guest guest
Oh, thank you so much. Pediatric Nutrition is an area that interests me and I've been focused in my current area so long, that I wanted some places to refresh/relearn that information. When I was completing my coursework in school, we had to " live a diet " that we grabbed out of a hat to see what it was like. Although it wasn't an elimination diet... I had chronic kidney disease and I found it to be really difficult. I agree with you completely that when you have to live that way, you can completely understand. [bULK] Re: Pediatric Nutrition Importance: Low Jen, I am not sure what you mean by resources, do you mean what references you would have on the shelf, recommend to others or what fields a pediatric dietitian should know well. In answer to the latter question, I think breastfeeding support and food allergies and intolerances is underexplored (especially when you combine the two). When I say breastfeeding support, I mean knowing how to help the mother and baby breastfeed, especially when clinical issues are concerned. If anything, knowing the role of an IBCLC is important. As for food allergies, going beyond elimination diets and providing counsel with how to comply with any dietary restrictions (besides reading labels). In my formal education, both topics were taught in a very concise and basic manner, not in a way that could equip the dietitian to counsel. And many people assume that if you are a dietitian you know both areas very well. If you don't mind my rant, I think it would benefit every dietitian to go on an elimination diet. There is a great learning curve when one has to eliminate a food they have been accustomed to consuming on a regular basis. It's not just eliminating a food, it is redeveloping recipes, adjusting costs, shopping at different stores, and dealing with social situations (like pot lucks and " different " school lunches). Maybe it was just me, but it was only when I or a close friend personally had to go through these issues that it sunk in how little I was prepared to deal with it. Anyway, the pediatric nutrition practice group has a professional resources page: http://www.pediatricnutrition.org/links/professionals.php <http://www.pediatricnutrition.org/links/professionals.php> where they also link to the pedi-rd listserv, another place you could ask your question.
