Guest guest
, You are lucky and smart that your husband has private disability insurance. I have had it for a number of years because I've worked on jobs that don't provide for that. Phil and I talked getting it for him about it before he was diagnosed but never acted on it. Darn! (We've just been married 3 years). CA has state disability and a person goes out on that first, it lasts a year. You can then claim ss disability, which we decided to do because it would be almost impossible for him to find a job. Kaiser helped us with it. You have to be out of work for 5 months before ss diasability kicks in and on it for 2 years before medicare kicks in ( I don't understand the reasoning for that at all). You can go back and claim the ss disability after the fact, which we did and when you are approved they will back pay you from the 5 month time on. On top of that they pay along with the state disability. (This is one time I was really glad to be living in CA). CA has some good laws when it comes to health care and employment issues. That helps since it is more expensive to live here and of course we pay into the disability insurance from our paychecks. The state disability has to be applied for within a certain amount of time, but not the ss disability. Many have said that they routinely turn you down the first time, so don't get too discouraged, just keep trying. Luckily because Phil had 3 doctors backing him up and all his paperwork done in an organized manner, he was accepted the first time. If anyone deserves to collect on this it is you guys with this disease. Peg, wife of Phil(57), UC 30 yrs, dx PSC 12/98, listed 2/2000-status 3, live in So. Calif.
