Would love to hear commentary about the following. I'm also one that has

heard RDs suggest that Statins to lower cholesterol helps reduce heart attacks,

but I've NEVER seen research that proves this.

Jan Patenaude, RD

(High cholesterol - untreated - but my mother is 82, no hx of heart disease

or stroke and had a chol level well over 300 much of the time since she was

60 y/o - has had problems the last 3 years with high blood pressure, but we

think it's mostly Vit. D deficiency related since she moved " to town " and isn't

gardening many hours a day in the summer sun.)

Russert's untimely death raises questions about how we're treating heart

disease

Dear Friend,

You won't hear me say this often about anyone in mainstream media, but Tim

Russert, NBC newsman and anchor of Meet the Press, was someone I respected. I

took great joy in watching politicians squirm under his tough questioning.

So, like most Americans, I was sad to hear the tragic news of his sudden

death. After all, Russert was just 58 years old — relatively young by today's

standards.

According to his doctors, he had diabetes, heart disease, and he was

overweight. Yet without fail, every time I hear a news story or read an article

on

his death, the commentators express their surprise that something like this

could happen to someone who was on blood pressure pills and cholesterol drugs,

who exercised routinely (in fact, he worked out on the treadmill the morning

he died), and who was on a diet. He'd even recently passed a stress test.

I wish I could say I was shocked by this news. Unfortunately, stories like

this one only highlight what I've been telling you all along: Blood pressure

doesn't cause heart disease, high cholesterol drugs aren't cure-alls, and

exercise can do more harm than good. In short, none of the steps Russert's

doctors told him to take to address his health concerns were doing a darn bit

of

good.

Instead, if someone had told him to focus on keeping his homocysteine levels

low and his magnesium levels high, we might not be having this conversation

in the first place. Homocysteine makes cholesterol stick to your artery

walls and can also contribute the hardening of your arteries. It's simple to

control your cholesterol levels by loading up on B vitamins, like B6, B12 and

folate.

Magnesium also has vital heart-healthy benefits.

" Statins don't protect against heart attacks. And [Russert] didn't know that

the lack of one nutrient could have cost him his life, " said acclaimed

neurosurgeon Dr. Blaylock. " The number-one cause of sudden cardiac

death

is magnesium deficiency. Cardiac patients and those with diabetes have the

lowest magnesium levels of all. "

I've written to you before about the many benefits of magnesium. This

mineral prevents blood clots, dilates blood vessels, and can also stop the

development of dangerous heart irregularities. It's why I've been such a

long-time

advocate of increasing magnesium intake for its heart-health benefits – not

to

mention what it does for your bones and bodily tissues. I've even used

magnesium in emergency medicine to help limit brain damage in stroke victims.

And

yet more than half of Americans have a magnesium deficiency.

" People who are deficient in magnesium are most likely to have sudden

cardiac arrest, and when they do arrest, they are harder to resuscitate, "

Blaylock

says. " Many simply can't be resuscitated. "

Dr. Belkin, surgeon in chief of New York's Montefiore Medical Center,

did a good job of summing up just why the death of the beloved newsman has

so shaken both Americans in general and doctors in particular: " It makes us

all feel mortal, and it also highlights the natural history of this silent

killer and our limited ability to catch this killer before it strikes. "

Jan: I also do not believe that statins are the miracle drug they are

portrayed to be and know that other natural approaches to cholesterol

management and improved cardiac health are actually much more effective. The

articles that you have included show this and we must continue to get this

message out to the public. However, I think that another potentially

important issue in Tim Russert's death is being missed. He died of a

coronary thrombosis after a long overnight flight from Italy to the US. The

possibility exists that sitting on this flight could have caused a blood

clot to form in his legs. No one has mentioned this that I have heard. My

Aunt had exactly that happen. Since so many people travel internationally

it is important to be aware of the potential for clots and get up and move

around. I know this is often very difficult but no less important. My

father-in-law had phlebitis and was told to stop every two hours when

traveling to get out and move around. Just something to think about. I

also had a great deal of respect for Tim Russert. He will be missed.

Jan,

Don't know about magnesium but I do know statins tend to increase the omega 6

to omega 3 ratio, which is a pro-inflammatory progression. Reference is below.

Monika

Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids. 2004 Oct;71(4):263-9. Links

Statin treatment alters serum n-3 and n-6 fatty acids in hypercholesterolemic

patients. JI, Hibbeln JR, Mackey RH, Muldoon MF.

Department of Medicine, Center for Clinical Pharmacology, School of Medicine,

University of Pittsburgh, 4015 O'Hara Street, Old Engineering Hall, Room 506,

Pittsburgh, PA 15260, USA.

Statins are highly effective cholesterol-lowering drugs but may have broader

effects on metabolism. This investigation examined effects of simvastatin on

serum levels of n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Subjects were

106 healthy adults with hypercholesterolemia randomly assigned to receive

placebo or 40 mg simvastatin daily for 24 weeks. Serum fatty acids were analyzed

by gas chromatography. Total fatty acid concentration fell 22% in subjects

receiving simvastatin (P<.001), with similar declines across most fatty acids.

However, concentrations of arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6), eicosapentanoic acid

(EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) were unchanged. Relative

percentages of linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (LNA,

18:3n-3), decreased while AA and DHA increased (P's < or = .007). In addition,

simvastatin increased the AA:EPA ratio from 15.5 to 18.8 (P<.01), and tended to

increase the AA:DHA ratio (P=.053). Thus,

simvastatin lowered serum fatty acid concentrations while also altering the

relative percentages of important PUFAs.

Good Morning.

I often listen to Lipid Luminations which is a XM raido program for medical

professionals. Must be an M.D. to join. Last week Dr Richman spoke on the

importance of partical testing. There are several great sites on the topic. No

one spoke about this type of testing after Russerts death.

So, like most Americans, I was sad to hear the tragic news of his sudden

death. After all, Russert was just 58 years old - relatively young by

today's

standards.

According to his doctors, he had diabetes, heart disease, and he was

overweight. Yet without fail, every time I hear a news story or read an

article on

his death, the commentators express their surprise that something like this

could happen to someone who was on blood pressure pills and cholesterol

drugs,

who exercised routinely (in fact, he worked out on the treadmill the morning

he died), and who was on a diet.

In short, none of the steps Russert's

doctors told him to take to address his health concerns were doing a darn

bit of

good.

Instead, if someone had told him to focus on keeping his homocysteine levels

low and his magnesium levels high, we might not be having this conversation

in the first place. Homocysteine makes cholesterol stick to your artery

walls and can also contribute the hardening of your arteries. It's simple to

control your cholesterol levels by loading up on B vitamins, like B6, B12

and

folate.

Magnesium also has vital heart-healthy benefits.

World Famous Eye Doctor Shows YOU How - At Home -

You Can learn how to See Clearly Again

I couldn't believe my eyes the first time I saw Dr. Gottlieb (the creator of

the method) demonstrate it with a female patient. In virtually no time at

all - just a couple of minutes, in fact - she was reading the tiniest print

on

the chart. Yet, before the session started she was telling Dr. Gottlieb how

she thought she needed a stronger pair of reading glasses!

Needless to say, her attitude changed...

It's why I've been such a

long-time

advocate of increasing magnesium intake for its heart-health benefits - not

to

mention what it does for your bones and bodily tissues. I've even used

magnesium in emergency medicine to help limit brain damage in stroke

victims. And

yet more than half of Americans have a magnesium deficiency.

Fighting on in the battle against heart disease,

s II, M.D.
