Hi ,

I just wrote and published and recently released my first book this

month! Entirely self-published, and I'll do the same again in an instant!

Feel free to contact me privately with specific questions. Also feel

free to go onto my www.californiabasedpublishing.com website to check

the book out. It was a HUGE learning curve, but an incredible experience.

I've shared this before, but there are three resources I highly recommend:

Dan Poytner's book, " Self-Publishing Manual " ,

Bowerman's book, " The Well-Fed Self-Publisher " ,

and the self-publishing Yahoo groups listserv, at

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Self-Publishing/

I will also share that I LOVED 's book. In the back, he has a

time-line that I'm surprised I don't have memorized.

Hi ,

I have self-published a couple of books - Drawing the Line on Calories,

Carbs, and Fat and Is Your Personality Type Making You Fat? While Drawing

the Line is done in hardcopy format, Is Your Personality Type... is done on

CD and ebook format. Having done both, I highly recommend the CD or ebook

format. First of all, it gives you plenty of flexibility to make changes.

It also saves you from having a garage-full of books plaguing you to get

them sold. Since so many sales are consummated online, your customers

obviously have computers to view your work in an electronic format.

Your overall costs are lower with a CD than a hard copy or paperback version

of a book. Even better yet are ebooks. Once you've gotten to the point of

appreciating the ease of an electronic version and its other advantages,

then it's even cheaper to do an ebook. When you offer both versions (CD and

ebook) you give your customers choice. Some people just feel the need to

have something they can hold in their hands.

Just keep in mind that writing the book is really the fun part. Marketing

and selling the book is a whole lot more challenging. Don't underestimate

the amount of time, energy and mental space for concentrating that it takes

for getting the book written. Trying to write a book in your spare time

will only leave you frustrated. It seems that there is a warm-up phase each

time you sit down to write and if you can only get to it a couple of days a

week, you'll have a harder time establishing the flow of the book.

If you have more specific questions, please feel free to contact me with

them.

plus now there's an electronic device that allows you to take the e-book

anywhere. I saw many people in the airport using them. It's the size of a closed

book.

Would that be the Kindle (Amazon)? I've been pondering purchasing one.

I know several nurse educators who have them and love them.

No, my books aren't on Amazon's Kindle. I actually published the books as

..pdf files. When someone purchases one from my site, I send them a link and

password to download the book. While Amazon does give you exposure, their

percentage discount required is quite high. Don't look to make much profit

when dealing with Amazon. Better to view them as part of your marketing

expenses with a little gravy on the top. If you go the route I've done, the

way I get my ebooks on Amazon is to offer them on CDs and therefore

something tangible that Amazon can sell. You can even do that on your

website since there are some people who like to have something in their hand

not just on their computer.
