(Address: Department of Nutrition, College, 300 The Fenway, and Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA 02115, USA. E-mail: fung@... ). Summary: In a prospective cohort study involving 88,517 female nurses between the ages of 34 and 59 years, adherence to a DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension)-style diet was found to be associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. Over a 24 year follow-up period, 2,129 cases of incident nonfatal myocardial infarction, 976 CHD deaths, and 2,317 [corrected] cases of stroke were documented. DASH score was based on consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes, low-fat dairy, red and processed meats, sweetened beverages, and sodium. After adjusting for various potentially confounding factors, the relative risks of CHD across quintiles of DASH score were found to be: 1.0, 0.99, 0.86, 0.87, and 0.76, and the multivariate relative risks of stroke were found to be: 1.0, 0.92, 0.91, and 0.82. In addition, a higher DASH score was significantly associated with lower plasma C-reactive protein and lower plasma interleu kin-6 levels. The authors conclude, " Adherence to the DASH-style diet is associated with a lower risk of CHD and stroke among middle-aged women during 24 years of follow-up.
