How about tying into the " walk americal " program? Google search should find

this valuable program.

Hi, everyone.

I have the opportunity to provide input to the county regarding ways to help

decrease the rates of heart disease and obesity in the county. And there is

a lot of interest in prevention, as opposed to only treatment.

What do you think would be the best ways to tackle this issue? Ways that

would be efficient and effective. I have so many ideas swirling around in my

head, but think it would be best to only present the most efficient and

effective ones.

Any input or suggestions from all of you would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !

What a great opportunity (especially because prevention is their interest).

What is efficient and effective really depends on so many factors, but I

agree with Jan that a walking program may be a good place to start. Maybe

initiatives to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. The best place to

start is to listen to people in your community. Unfortunately a lot of great

ideas get discarded simply because they weren't designed to handle

the dynamics at the local level.

What state are you in? Check with your state's division of public health to

see if there are any initiatives you can partner with. If there is a public

health program at a university in your state, you may be able to talk with

someone there too. You may also want to ask this question on the Public

Health Nutritionist's listserv:

All the best,
