" Side Effects of Corticosteroids. Standard steroids can have distressing

and sometimes serious long-term side effects. Adverse effects include

the following:

Susceptibility to infection

Weight gain (particularly increased fatty tissue on the face and

upper trunk and back)

Acne

Excess hair growth

Hypertension

Accelerated osteoporosis

Cataracts and glaucoma

Diabetes, wasting of the muscles

Menstrual irregularities

Upper gastrointestinal ulcers, especially when patients also take

NSAIDs

Personality change, including irritability, insomnia, psychosis,

and depression. Such emotional changes are sometimes severe enough

to produce suicidal thoughts.

Growth may be retarded in children. "

CNS reactions: transverse myelitis, convulsions, meningitis, transient

lesions of the posterior spinal column, cauda equina syndrome,

Guillain-Barre syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, mental depression,

vertigo, hearing loss, insomnia, ataxia, hallucinations, tinnitus and

drowsiness.
