Poteen (pron. pocheen) used to be made in hidden distilleries up in the

mountains, at the back of beyonds etc. It was unregulated, obviously, and

was made, according to rumour/legend, from absolutely anything - potato

skins, old shoes, anything that was lying around.

Almost 100 percent alcohol and highly lethal.

A few years ago the law changed to allow a regulated version to be made and

sold. I have no idea how legit it is and I have only seen it in Duty-Free

shops, so it could just be a tourist gimmick based on the " legend. "
