April,

From Arthritis Today:

ARTHRITIS-ACNE CONNECTION

Q. Is there any connection between rheumatoid arthritis and acne? For

two years I have had a severe case and can't identify any other cause.

A. No, there is no connection between acne and rheumatoid arthritis

(RA), but there is a condition known as " acne arthritis, " or SAPHO

syndrome. SAPHO is an acronym for the condition's symptoms, which

include synovitis (or inflammation of the joint lining similar to that

seen in RA); acne that most commonly affects the armpits and neck;

palmoplantar pustulosis, pus-filled blisters on the soles of the feet

and palms of the hands; hyperostosis, excessive enlargement of the

outer layer of the bone; and inflammation of the bone. The acne of

SAPHO syndrome is often severe; the arthritis usually involves a few

large joints, such as the hips or knees, and typically does not cause

joint destruction the way RA does.

If the pattern of your acne and joint involvement is similar to what I

have described, I would recommend consulting your physician. You may

have this instead of RA. Otherwise, I suspect your acne and arthritis

are unrelated.
